Are any of these considered lateral transfers?

Probably all of them except Davis.

why? maryland is a better school than loyola, and davis isn't really better than hastings, basically maryland lateral transfers to davis/hastings, and actually downgrades to loyola

Thanks - it would be purely for geographic reasons.

Jah'rakal, you're losing your touch. That post was actually based in reality.

what's wrong with pepperdine? it's on par with loyola if OP thinks Loyola as a target

So: Loyola (LA)/Pepperdine would be transferring down (median+), Hastings would be about equal (30%+), UCI/Davis may be a slight transfer up (25%+), USC/UCLA would be a fairly serious move up (15%+), and Berkeley would be _________ (5%+). Is this about right?

If you go to Maryland though you can enjoy the great park right outside the law school! ;)

Lateral in what sense? Maryland is a bigger deal in Maryland than the others are in CA. However, CA is a much larger market. In my opinion, the difference would be in the fringes - state law jobs (and other similar positions) would be easier to get from Maryland than the others due to a relative lack of instate competition.

Regardless, you would need top 15-20% (and possibly LR) at any of them to have a shot of big law barring anything special.

This is the only reason to make this move. You won't be able to get a job in CA from UMD, and you won't be able to get a job in MD from a non-T20 CA school. You should go to school where you want to practice.

OP dont go to law school expecting to transfer. especially if you're minimum 70+% of failing to do so (really even 85-90% chance of failing to do so if we're talking worthwhile schools) involves you being stuck in maryland when you want california. pick a Coast homie

Why? Davis has horrific employment numbers and a tution rate that increases at 10% a year.
