I live at home and it's awesome for me. My parents travel a lot and are not here half the time. Im lucky enough to live in an area of the house with a separate entrance and I have my own space, so maybe some people have it worse than i do. But if you get along with your parents, why not? I spend next to nothing on food and living expenses.

Worked out great for me, too. I'm about to move out, and admittedly, three years is a Loooong time. But like SF, I have my own entrance and space (mother-in-law apartments FTW), and we get along great. I also have free range of their kitchen, if I want, and my childhood dogs are around. I lived away from home for a few years before law school, which I recommend. It's saved me a ton of money, which makes it all worthwhile. I'm so glad I'm moving back out, though! I also moved out of town for the summers, which helped a lot with my sanity.

Basically, everyone has different parent situations. Don't judge. And if it doesn't work out, they can still move out later. Figure out what a year of rent will cost you. For me, it was enough to warrant moving back home.

There's some insensitivity going on here. In a lot of (most?) cultures, it's weird to leave your parents' home before you have your own family, especially if your parents are getting on in age, and especially if you're not married yet yourself.

Amount of money I would save each month by living with my folks instead of on my own:

Rent: $480
Food: roughly $200
Gas: $15 for 8 months of the year; $100 for 4 months of the year
Electricity: $20
Cable/Internet: $50

That's like somewhere between 750 and 850 per month depending on time of year. So basically like 9-10 grand per year by living with your parents.

If you can't see why some people get along with their parents enough to live with them and see incredible value in saving close to $30,000 over the course of their law school attendance, what the hell is wrong with you?

Is it the SOLE reason one should choose one school over another? No (not any more than a $30,000 scholarship should be the SOLE factor). Is it, for some people, a viable option that should be considered? Absolutely.

I am not living with my parents for law school. But the idea of it doesnt sound that horrible if you lived next to a great school. It would probably allow you to be more focussed...

you know atually the idea of having to stuy at my house just sounds horrible. When I do UG work on breaks its bad enough so yeah...nevermind

Why is this crazy talk? I won't be living at home, but if living at home and saving $10k/yr means that you won't have to move back in with your folks after you graduate, then I say go for it. Imagine not having to pay back that extra $30k or so. Check your ego at the door. I love the douchebaggery that runs rampant on this website, especially when it comes from people in their early twenties who have never had a real job in their entire lives.

+1. I managed to rack up 10 grand (in total) for UG debt and it was solely so that I could pay rent, even though my parents lived in the same city as my UG.

It was bad ass having parties and stuff, but now I'm just like frustrated that I even have that debt.
