Duke or Cornell for NYC Biglaw?

Post by cardstrong5 » Wed Jul 11, 2012 8:26 pm

I love NYC and I'd love to go biglaw in that market. Should I go Cornell, which I hear has good biglaw placement and is in NY state, or Duke, which is (marginally) higher ranked and warmer?

At the same cost? Whichever you like more. If you can't decide, go with Cornell for the closer proximity to (and more concentrated alumni network in) NYC.

If you want a big firm (50+ attorneys) job in NYC, you would be insane to turn down Cornell for Duke. Pretty much every firm with 50 or more attorneys in NY visits Cornell.

This is the correct response.

All things equal, Cornell, but once you get over 30-50k or so in scholarship it becomes more even.

Cornell. But why did you post yesterday saying you had a 171/4.1 and asking for app advice?

I'm posting because, honestly, I think a 171 and a 4.1 will pretty much guarantee Duke and Cornell and finances for my situation are not much of an issue (I've been very blessed).

Well it will also guarantee NYU and probably Columbia, which are better than both of these for NYC big law. Also, Y, H and S are possible.

Agreed. You're aiming way too low. You're a T6 lock, probably with some money at CCN.
