I was in the same boat as you last year. I was considering attending Whittier with a scholarship. It would have been the biggest screw up of my life. Those scholarship stipulations are horrible. Not to mention their 50% attrition rate. I see that you are thinking of Pepperdine, why not retake? I'm glad I listened to everyone on TLS last year who told me to retake and never count on transferring. I studied for the LSAT like mad and increased my LSAT 11 points. I have a horrible gpa for California law schools and I can't leave SoCal. However, retaking is the best decision i ever make. I got into UC Davis and Pepperdine with money. Pepperdine's stipulation is nowhere near Whittier's. 5%? 10%? They're crazy!! I withdrew 2 days before Orientation.mikebag23 wrote:Hey all,
So I got accepted into Whittier (T4) with a $27,500 merit scholarship, and Southwestern (T3) with no scholarship. I would have to relocate to attend Whittier, so I am estimating about $15,000 of that going to housing. My main priority is transferring out to a T1 or T2. My good friend just got accepted into Pepperdine after placing in the top 10% at Whittier, so I have some hope for that school. I am confident I can place in the top 10% at either school. My question is, keeping in mind that transferring is my main priority, do I take the scholarship despite half of it going to relocation costs, or pay sticker at Southwestern?
Any advice would be appreciated...Thanks.

southwestern isn't half bad, it's extremely local, but i know for a fact its alumni is very helpful to its own, if u r happy with a mid sized firm job in LA, southwestern is ok, but don't expect to take that degree to other states

Congrats on doing well. Still doesn't really change or disprove anything that was said ITT before. Going to these schools is still a terrible idea.

Sorry the same cant be said for the vast majority of your class.
Good luck with possibly transfering and eventually securing long term, full time, JD required employment.

Re: Southwestern sticker or Whittier with 27k?
I am genuinely glad that this worked out for the OP (as Nova said, tentatively). But let's not forget that there are countless others in his class who are looking back (or will soon look back) and realize that they made the biggest mistake of their life by going to Whitter/Southwestern. No one- not me, not anyone else- has ever maintained that it is impossible to have success from schools like these. Some people do kill it, transfer out, and have good careers. OP's success really doesn't prove or disprove anything; he's an outlier and beat the odds. But making major investment decisions based on extreme outliers is very irrational, which is why people shouldn't attend these schools. Sure, sometimes 2-7 beats pocket aces, but that doesn't make it a good bet. There are dozens, even hundreds of others in his 1L class who thought they would buck the trend as well, and now they're suffocating under a mountain of debt with virtually no shot at a decent legal job.
Also, lest OP gets too cocky, I know people who transferred from schools of this caliber to my T20. Many of them struck out at OCI. I think transferring to a school like UCLA/USC is the credited move and based on his post history it sounds like that's what he intends to do, but it is by no means a guarantee of anything. OP, your prize for killing it at your TTTT and transferring up may simply be more debt. I don't doubt that you'll find some form of legal employment, but the high-paying jobs that you'll likely need to service your debt may still be hard to come by. I sincerely wish you the best of luck though.

Guess I'm sympathetically happy the guy crushed it, as we're all here to help each other make good choices and succeed. But serving as it does to encourage others looking to make the same choice, I want to say:
Don't take a 150k bet on 3% odds. Worst. Casino. Game. Ever.
