Need your help!
Hey, need some help from everyone.
Just got off of emory's waitlist tonight with an offer of 17k per year, have to decide by Friday.
Iowa- no scholarships
Nebraska - Full ride
Case Western Reserve Univ. Full ride w/ stipend
I dont mind where I practice, however attorneys in Nebraska are much more impressed with degrees from Iowa and Emory. Not sure if the debt load is too much to just go ahead and take emory's offer. At this point Im leaning that way.
Not sure what I want to practice, just want the best options when I get done with school. All opinions welcome, time sensitive.
Thanks

From Nebraska. Have some good contacts with Kutak Rock attorneys, the big firm around here. When I spoke to my mentor/family friend he believed an application to his hiring partner with Emory and Iowa would make it easier, much easier. I have to add. connections i have in Nebraska are not anything special. no certainty of jobs even if i did well. and the big firms have been stagnant compared to previous years on hiring. locals that leave and come back from better schools seem to fare well though.

I'd do Nebraska (if no scholarship stips) or retake. Emory is too expensive for what you're getting.

I think Nebraska is the safe bet. Iowa/Emory is a toss up, and if you really want to take out 100k+ debt for either, I would choose the more affordable one. If you have not already, find out whether you would qualify for in state tuition for 2L and 3L at Iowa.

Dark side of any of those schools is that you're SOL if you don't do well. You don't want to be 200k in the hole with no job.jlaw19 wrote:From Nebraska. Re: Need your help!
1) Nebraska if you want to practice law in Nebraska
2) Case Western Reserve since you're open geographically & you have a full tuition & fees scholarship plus stipend (any stipulations to retain your scholarship in successive years?).
3) Iowa because it's easy to get in-state tuition rates after your first year & is close to your presumed target market (Nebraska, Omaha & the Mid-west).
4) Emory because big debt will make you tough.

With a 156, 162/4.07, have you considered retaking the LSAT & reapplying next cycle ?
Any news on the Northwestern or Virginia waitlist status ?

Sweet mother, retake. 4.07 and 3 months serious study for the October LSAT would pay off enormous dividends.
Seriously, don't waste a 4.0+

Haha. Ive thought about it. Worried though that regardless ill do the same or worse. I felt pretty stupid after taking it the second time and still getting horrid results. I will say this i took about 30 practice tests averaged 168. BUT I really dont want to sit idle for a year. My ug degree is not marketable, cj is a trick major.ru2486 wrote:FOR THE LOVE OF GOD, RETAKE IS THE ANSWER

Virginia updated me today. Sounds unlikely for most of us left in the w/l. I would jump on the chance to attend there obviously. NW i havent heard from, great rep in my area, well everywhere but omaha market really likes itCanadianWolf wrote:With a 156, 162/4.07, have you considered retaking the LSAT & reapplying next cycle ?

Re: Need your help!
Emory got some raised eyebrows at the firm i work at (office b**** is my title). The attorney i spoke with said iowa and emory were strong choices, however he wouldnt have the loans. I want to stress that even nebraska attorneys, people that went there and loved it, arent overly excited about what it can do for me. Alot of midsize to big firms jump at the chance to pluck a grad from 30 on up, maybe due to the fact nebraska has two less than world renowned lass schools (gotta watch out for that new nebraska law space law program though )

Side bar: I may be having illusions of grandeur about emory and i dont want emory grads tp storm the market but the reputation here is strong if one has ties. However 28000 per year in tuition only is alot with the legal market where it is and even the largest firm here only starts at 90000. And anyone my senior doesnt see the poibt in retaking, trust me i do and could get by with my current employment but in all honesty im ready to get started as well

;
Emory non URMs this cycle:
161/3.9 60k
162/3.9 60k
165/3.9 90k
165/3.9 90k
166/3.8 90k
166/4.0 90k
Well, at Emory, you should try to get your scholly bumped to 20k a year, since they are giving that to others with worse numbers. 3 more LSAT points would likely net you 30k. Whether that is worth the wait is up to you.jlaw19 wrote:Side bar: I may be having illusions of grandeur about emory and i dont want emory grads tp storm the market but the reputation here is strong if one has ties.
