Emory Minimum
What's the minimum you think it would take to attend? Would you go for full tuition?

Re: Emory Minimum
A big part of my calculus for law school is my ROI vs. opportunity cost-- I am at an age where most people are approaching mid-career, and my alternative to law school would be to seek out somethig entry-level (I was in the Army for a while, and my experience doesn't translate to anything civilian). So basically I'm banking on big law, because the pay is so much better than my alternative. If I don't get biglaw than my calculus gets thrown off and law school might not end up being worth it, because I'll be three years older and looking at a salary not much better than I could've gotten without the JD.
So in short--I probably would not go to Emory, because I think it's unlikely I get biglaw from there. But if I were graduating from there at like 26 with low debt (like <75 K total), I'd probably do it, because I could afford to take more risks at that age.

Re: Emory Minimum
If I was okay ending up in the South, 20-25k a year scholarship minimum. I would even take sticker if you only wanted the south and didn't have any other good offers.

I would want my total COA to be no more than 90-100K, personally. Preferably lower.

Only if it ended up being less than UGA in-state tuition.

Because its way too expensive for the career stats they output. Also, Atl is a slaughterhouse.noleknight16 wrote:I don't understand why everyone hates on Emory so much

I think it's a bit harsh though. Emory isn't too far behind Vanderbilt IMO but Emory gets way more hate.top30man wrote:Because its way too expensive for the career stats they output. Also, Atl is a slaughterhouse.noleknight16 wrote:I don't understand why everyone hates on Emory so much

Re: Emory Minimum
2010 private sector salary data says 50th percentile at Emory is 130k and Vandy is 137k. The noticeable difference happens at the 25th percentile.Ruxin1 wrote:Median grades at Vandy or Median grades at Emory...noleknight16 wrote:I think it's a bit harsh though. You realize that a much smaller percentage of the class is getting those jobs within that range....bimodial...oh forget it there's no hope for some people.noleknight16 wrote:

Look, all I'm saying is I don't see enough of a difference in the data below to warrant such Emory hate.Ruxin1 wrote:You realize that a much smaller percentage of the class is getting those jobs within that range....bimodial...oh forget it there's no hope for some people.noleknight16 wrote:

Re: Emory Minimum
Because at how expensive emory is, you are most likely going to be needing biglaw to service debt, and you have betweena 1 in 4 or 1 in 3 shot, not very good odds.

Re: Emory Minimum
I agree. 46k of debt in tuition+fees/year is too high for what you're getting. But Vandy is right there at 46k tooRuxin1 wrote:Because at how expensive emory is, you are most likely going to be needing biglaw to service debt, and you have betweena 1 in 4 or 1 in 3 shot, not very good odds.
Vanderbilt doesn't appear to be that much better based on the salary data I cited. Where's the Vandy hate? I feel that on TLS Emory is getting harsh criticism and Vandy gets a pass. That's all I'm saying.

Re: Emory Minimum
Much of the negative view of Emory was started by Emory law students' complaints about their career services office.

Re: Emory Minimum
Take a look at 2011 employment at Emory and UGA:
http://www.law.emory.edu/index.php?id=7946
http://www.law.uga.edu/placement-statistics
You might find discerning these stats difficult because the difference is marginal at best. Even the 7% difference in the number employed at 9 months is negligible considering the amount of debt Emory grads incur. They're looking at upwards of 250k at sticker (probably more) versus, say, 120k. With that money you could open up your own practice, or just pay down the debt at half the monthly bill.
TLDR: if it's Georgia you're after, go to UGA.

Seems like a sizeable difference to me: http://www.top-law-schools.com/forums/v ... 1&t=181415
But Emory may get more hate than GW...then doesn't seem right.

Re: Emory Minimum
you have to admit that emory gets a lot more hate than warranted in comparison to its peer schools. the hate mainly comes from the whole above the law debacle about its cso and snowballed from there. the tuition is pretty crazy but at least half the students get a sizeable scholarship. you definitely shouldn't attend emory at full tuition, but id say that about pretty much any school.
Seriously? What are you waiting for?
