Final Showdown! Hofstra v Pitt

Post by mynameisami » Thu Apr 26, 2012 4:10 pm

Hey, you guys!
Thanks for taking the time to look at this. I tried searching for a related thread but I didn't see anything comparing these two particular options.

I found out I got into Pitt.

Again, I'm looking into Public Interest (Yes, for real-- I have a background in PI and I'm sure I want to stay in this field)
in the PA/NJ/NY/DE area... the specifics of that don't matter much to me.

I have a full scholly from Hofstra and a nearly full scholly from Pitt (technically a 14k scholly plus a third party URM scholly) and I'm in-state for Pitt. My parents said they'd cover living expenses, so that difference doesn't really matter to me either.

This decision's been weighing on me since I really have to decide soon.
So what do you guys think? Where should I attend?

Thanks in advance! :)

Where do you want to practice law? If the answer is New York go to Hofstra. if the answer is Pittsburgh go to pitt. They are both regional so since each is free go to the one in the market you want to practice. I bet if you think about it you have some things you are looking for in an area to live in. Did you visit them? which one did you like better? I hear Hofstra has kind of old buildings.

I'd go to Pitt since the competition is a lot lower than NYC in terms of jobs.

You couldn't pay me to go to Hofstra. But that's me.

I suppose I'd prefer to be closer to North Jersey or NY (not just NYC... I mean anywhere that isn't upstate) than Pittsburgh, but I'd rather have a job than live in one of those areas.

Also, the stip on the Hofstra scholly is top 40% whereas the stip on the Pitt scholly is 3.0 (which is apparently just about at the median).

With similar stips, I'd rather go to Pitt (and this is from someone who also applied to Hofstra and received a full ride). If you look at the C/O 2010 employment stats (https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/pub ... Bd3c&gid=2) 20% of Pitt students got into jobs with 50+ associates, vs just 8% from Hofstra. Long-term employed (- business jobs) was 65% for Pitt v 50% for Hofstra. While these numbers don't mean everything, they do show that Pitt is stronger in placement in general than Hofstra.
