Emory or Loyola
Hi all,
I just (minutes ago) got admitted to Emory law.
I had decided to go to Loyola (I live near LA, but would have to move closer to Loyola as commuting would be anywhere from 1 to 2+ hours each way depending on traffic, daily accidents, etc)
NO interest at all in "Big Law" - had a life-long desire to do PI and perhaps International law (on the Govt or non-profit, pro-human, pro-planet side).
Loyola is highly ranked by National Jurist for PI - way above many others.
Emory is in the top 25 and has pretty much been there for 4 years except for one odd slip to 30. Its also in Atlanta where the job market is supposedly less saturated than LA.
I'd prefer to be in CA, but don't mind working in GA.
What are your thoughts on this?

That's great you don't want biglaw. Is your total debt going to be under 90K for either? Because otherwise, you're gonna need that biglaw money bruh.
If you're independently wealthy disregard this question.

Also the Atlanta market remains a shitstorm where firms are beholden to grades and prestige, for what that's worth. It isn't some unsaturated, untapped jobs paradise where jobs grow on trees.

Love that Paul Campos was the first person to post a response

Emory $18/yr (total $54k)
Loyola $5k/yr (total $15k)

What's your total COA? Financing living expenses?emola wrote:

I don't know what to make of these figures. Loyola is only 5K a year? Or that's the scholarship amount?

Scholarship money - thought that's what Paul Campos had asked.
I'm willing to borrow the balance, and am trying to decide on which of the 2 is a better bet for a job in the areas I'd mentioned.
I know its a millstone, but many of my colleagues over the years seem to be surviving and still look happy.
So right now its #24 or #51 (per the dreaded US News) for a job in 2015.
Thanks

You're not gonna get a job in international PI.

Neither school is worth that much money. You would have to be absolutely insane to pay almost 200k for Loyola.emola wrote: Emory $18/yr (total $54k)

200K for Loyola is insanity. Emory at that price is less insane as it has a great rep in the southeast (Atlanta specifically) but that's still a little pricey.

I honestly wouldn't go to either. Emory for $150k is too expensive. Loyola is even worse. Emory is OP's best, albeit excessively mediocre, option.tfleming09 wrote:200K for Loyola is insanity. Retake is in order.

Re: Emory or Loyola
Do you have substantial prior PI experience? That can be a huge factor in PI jobs. Probably as hard or harder to get than biglaw these days.

Yes, 12 years in a non-lawyer capacity, at 3 different PI firms.

I'm no expert in PI, but that's sounds pretty damn substantial. You probably do have a good chance at PI with that kind of experience.emola wrote:Yes, 12 years in a non-lawyer capacity, at 3 different PI firms.

Probably. But at these prices it's still too much of a gamble to rely on that outcome.RedBirds2011 wrote:I'm no expert in PI, but that's sounds pretty damn substantial. Before deciding, ask Loyola to increase your scholarship offer based on Emory's offer.
