Re: Alabama with $$$
Kind of what I figured. I worry about NW being worth it at sticker as well, since I don't particularly want to work in Chicago or NY, and if I do miss the biglaw boat I'm not sure an accounting firm gig could support $250k in loans (I think for JD's they run in the $70kish realm). The one thing I like about Alabama would be for my backup plan--if I wound up at median--having their athletic department for possible externships could be pretty clutch. They must need a ton of hands in compliance with how much they are cheating/paying their football playersrad lulz wrote:Given your career goals, the job you have now, the fact that you have no AL ties, and the fact that ATL hiring is a shitshow right now, no I would not go to Bama. Bama is not a good choice for Charlotte either.
Best be for you for law school generally is to retake for a few more points and get into NW. They take some people with those low GPAs and high LSAT + work experience.

Though it does sound cool, I don't know how realistic of a backup plan this isBmoreOrLess wrote:rad lulz wrote: The one thing I like about Alabama would be for my backup plan--if I wound up at median--having their athletic department for possible externships could be pretty clutch. Re: Alabama with $$$
Got a buddy that does it at our Alma Mater who was in the bottom half/third at William and Mary. He interned there 2L summer, externed at WM 3L, and wound up getting his current job. He got pretty lucky to get his current gig, but had options lined up at smaller schools.NoleMatt wrote:Though it does sound cool, I don't know how realistic of a backup plan this isBmoreOrLess wrote:rad lulz wrote: The one thing I like about Alabama would be for my backup plan--if I wound up at median--having their athletic department for possible externships could be pretty clutch. At that price, Alabama is a good deal since you want to live in The South & would consider living in Alabama after law school. Congratulations !

Tried and they said no additional funds are available. Even still, i think best case they give me in state, so it's still an extra 60k.keg411 wrote:Any chance you can try negotiating w/UGA?

Re: UPDATE: Full Ride at Alabama
If you went to SC for undergrad, then I would assume you are familiar with southern culture enough to handle Alabama and understand that they tend to favor their own. The cost is certainly low and COL in Tuscaloosa is surely not high, so that's a positive. Bama is a school that can take you outside of the state if you do well, but I would only attend if you would be comfortable with Birmingham/Huntsville/Montgomery and the more likely landing spots in the state. At the very least, you would get to see some high quality SEC football.

Re: UPDATE: Full Ride at Alabama
I agree, I just also don't know if I'm capable any better because of my GPA. I think my best case scenario--even if I were to pull a 173 or so--would be UVA, Northwestern, or Vandy at sticker. There's also the possibility of UGA with $$, but it seems like the best they give out is instate plus $5k. That is still going to put me at roughly $90k-$100k, which again I think Bama is still a better deal. I think my risk adjusted return at $36k from Bama would be better than $200k+ UVA, NW, or Vandy and probably better than UGA at $90k.rad lulz wrote:Bama is a good deal, it's just not great for Georgia, North Carolina, or South Carolina. Chances are you end up AL. So if you're cool w that...
Seems to me like the breakdown is:
All percentages are inclusive (they can overlap)
5% chance I have good transfer opportunities.
10-15% chance at a solid legal job
20-30% chance I get a small firm or big 4 accounting
50% chance I drop out with zero debt after 1L from savings
If none of the above happen, I try to go the NCAA compliance route (which if I do work at a public university, it does qualify for loan forgiveness.
Obviously there are some risks--mainly ability to get a job after doing poorly and dropping out after 1L--but from a financial standpoint it seems like my risks are limited to that and my savings that I wouldn't be able to touch otherwise because they are in retirement accounts.
If my thought process is wrong please let me know because I am having a hard time coming up with a reason not to do this after spending the last two months--mostly because of TLS--throwing out the option of law school because of the high costs with low odds of a reasonable return.

Only go to Alabama if you want to work in Alabama (and only in Alabama). Also, be prepared to give up your dreams of bigalw.
