Notre Dame ($) or Emory ($$)
Both would leave me with a fair amount of debt, but Emory would be significantly less. Atlanta seems like a much more desirable place to spend 3 years, but would the job prospects be so much better out of Notre Dame to justify the higher cost and the relocation to South Bend?

East Coast. Either in a large city in the northeast, or somewhere in the southeast where virtually all of my family is located.tfleming09 wrote:Where. Do. You. Want. To. Work?

Emory. Lower COA plus is the second most respected school in the Southeast.A1840 wrote:East Coast. Either in a large city in the northeast, or somewhere in the southeast where virtually all of my family is located.tfleming09 wrote:Where. Do. You. Want. To. Work?

slam dunk emory, but just be VERY careful about how much money you take out. you want to give yourself exit options. if i may, what would your total debt be at each place (ug inclusive)?

Re: Notre Dame ($) or Emory ($$)
Also important. Emory isn't worth a really high COA as Atlanta is a BigLawl slaughterhouse currently. And ATL firms are giant gradewhores so you're not getting BigLawl unless you're top 25% (and that's optimistic)ze2151 wrote:slam dunk emory, but just be VERY careful about how much money you take out. you want to give yourself exit options. if i may, what would your total debt be at each place (ug inclusive)?

Re: Notre Dame ($) or Emory ($$)
It would cost me about $120,000 to go to Emory and $144,000 to go to Notre Dame. This does not include the interest I will be accruing on these loans while I am still in school though. I'm hoping that I could bring these numbers down some by living cheaply and maybe getting a paid position over the summer, though I'm not counting too heavily on the latter.

Definitely Emory. I'd vote for Emory even if COA were equal at both.A1840 wrote:It would cost me about $120,000 to go to Emory and $144,000 to go to Notre Dame. If southeast, Emory. If you want to work in the Northeast, neither.

Emory and UGA are essentially peer schools at this point in Atlanta. What's the COA compared to Emory? Also remember living in Athens is dirt cheap and UGA girls are the right combination of hot and stupid when making this decisionA1840 wrote:I did, but I only got a tuition equalization since I'm OOS.bigeast03 wrote:Did you apply/get into UGA by any chance?

tfleming- that is not true.
op- 120k is a tremendously huge amount of money. think of ways to minimize that bill. and if you can't...think it over.

With the tuition equalization, shouldn't it be ~100k, give or take 5k? I know that isn't one of the schools in the poll and I don't want to be a d-bag, but given your goals and preferred region I think that would make a lot of sense to consider.A1840 wrote:I did, but I only got a tuition equalization since I'm OOS.bigeast03 wrote:Did you apply/get into UGA by any chance?

Re: Notre Dame ($) or Emory ($$)
UGA would only be about $85,000 but I worry that I would be sacrificing the option to leave Georgia, and I would like to have as much mobility as possible. Plus, if I wanted to stay regional, I would just go to UF, which I could go to for something like $45,000.tfleming09 wrote:Emory and UGA are essentially peer schools at this point in Atlanta. Also, I wouldn't describe Emory as especially portable. A few of the top kids go to NY maybe. Atlanta is their home market for obvious reasons.

I heard about 1 in 5 Emory grads go to the Northeast after graduation. True or no?

Re: Notre Dame ($) or Emory ($$)
TLS knowledge suggests that outside of the T14, and even there, portability is limited without ties. It would seem to make the most sense to balance debt and region you'd want to work. Florida at $45,000 would be a great deal if you ask me. It's cheap and you have ties to where you want to go.A1840 wrote:UGA would only be about $85,000 but I worry that I would be sacrificing the option to leave Georgia, and I would like to have as much mobility as possible. ETA: If you must choose between those two you listed, I would go with Emory.

Edit: at least I feel like it is based on anecdotal evidence. According to the TLS profile 22% of people take the bar in NY/NJ/PA but those figures are from 2008

tfleming- the peer schools thing.
you're speaking with some authority here. are you an emory student? or a dawg?
1 in 5 is generous. i would guess 1 in 7 or 1 in 8.

Neither. I work for biglawl firm in ATL. They're peers for all intents and purposes, at least in the eyes of this firm. Emory has slightly more mobility and an edge in lay prestige. Biglawl placement looks similar.ze2151 wrote:tfleming- the peer schools thing.

It's also been well publicized that Emory's OCI is total shit since the economy tanked
