Where are you from?

Alabama is really a state where the ties would come in useful. I introduced my wife to my cousin (an attorney in Dothan) and he asked if she was from up north. She said her mom was from North Carolina and had lived there ten years. He said, and I quote "Still has 'North' in it; You're a yankee."

OK, that is really anecdotal and was kind of a joke on my cousin's part, but there is a LOT of that feeling in the state about people that aren't from there. (Birmingham may be the exception to that.)

Don't know a think about how IL is.

Just something to think about.

Neither.

It you are from UNC , go to Wake or UNC. And suck it up about their admissions office. Yeah it sucks, but you need to do what is best for your long term prospects. You never have to talk to Admissions again if you don't want. Bury the hatchet and go if you get in.

Neither of these are good choices for someone who wants to end up in NC.

Did you apply to UNC and/or Wake Forest?

go to unc or wf if you get in if not then likely alabama or uiuc would get you to NC but i'd think that bama would be slightly better for a southern state

I just asking which is a better option considering that I don't care where I end up working. If that happens to be NC then fine but I really don't care.

I also have no false hope about getting a big law job from either school and I am fully aware that I may end up in an awful financial situation no matter which one I attend.

I just asking which is a better option between the two schools:

-Alabama with 20k a year

-Illinois with 5k a year
wehat rad was trying to tell you is that they are regional schools and especially with alabama the market tends to be insular ie they do n ot like people without ties however like i said alabama is the lesser of two evils in this case

I suppose Alabama is the "less bad" option since it is cheaper and you are a southerner. Both are solid schools, but the price tag of UIUC is way too high, and you have no ties to Alabama and want to work in NC. I know you say you don't care where you get a job, but presumably you do want to get a job somewhere. You said you know you probably won't land biglaw, so what type of job do you plan on doing that will allow you to service your debt?

I dunno. Hard to really go right here.

Illinois is for Chi-town.

So I'm not sure how important ties really are if you're gunning for Chicago. Someone might correct me about that though. It's probably not as good as NYC, but better than Alabama.

Even so, only 5k for out of state is ridiculously small. I can't imagine that UIUC will be this stingy next year. You know that you can get in, so why not take a year off and reapply? Or better, take year off, retake, then reapply. UIUC will accept you and probably give you more money..

It's just been an extremely screwy cycle for them. They're usually very generous with money. This year they've just been generous with acceptances.

OP: Is this a trick question ? Without ties to either region & with a willingness to work in any region, Alabama is the better option simply due to its much lower cost. With a 167/2.5, you are fortunate, in my opinion, to have received an offer of $20,000 scholarship per year to Alabama. (Illinois awards at least $5,000 to each acceptee since it's built into their price.)

You just need to wait on UNC & WFU if you want to work in your home state of North Carolina.

P.S. Did you apply to Tennessee ? That should enable you to interview during OCI with some North Carolina firms.

Seriously? What are you waiting for?

Now there's a charge.
Just kidding ... it's still FREE!
