Michigan vs UVA vs Georgetown
Hi. I'm new to TLS but it looks like you guys have a lot of insight about law schools so I'm looking for some advice. I heard back from most of my schools so far and have narrowed it down to Michigan UVA and Georgetown. So far the only merit $ I've received is 10k a year from Michigan although I don't think Georgetown has given out offers yet. I definitely want to be back in NY after graduation preferably at a large firm at least for the first few years. I have visited georgetown and although I like that its in a city I wasn't in love with the school. I still have yet to visit Michigan and UVA. From what I understand UVA is more "southern fratty" which I'm not too fond of but to be honest Michigan's numbers from the most recent NLJ 250 rankings scare me. Is michigan a poor choice for nyc biglaw? Please help!

Whichever is cheapest (which at this point seems to be Mich).

Probably Michigan at this point because of the money. Their numbers have been a little shaky the past few years, but from what I gather that was due to some poor advice from career services and there is no reason to think that the Michigan brand has really been diminished in any way.

Supposedly (from a couple of students on this board) they (career services) told the people that did OCI in 2009 to throw all their bids at the Chicago market and got owned by Chicago and NW. So they didn't do as well because the Chicago market got inundated with Mich students.Tadatsune wrote:I am curious as to what this advice was...bobbyh1919 wrote:Probably Michigan at this point because of the money. Yeah, apparently they had some analysts predict a big year for the Chicago market, and it wound up really hurting a lot of students there. Consensus is that bidding heavy on NY would have really helped their numbers.JoeMo wrote:Supposedly (from a couple of students on this board) they (career services) told the people that did OCI in 2009 to throw all their bids at the Chicago market and got owned by Chicago and NW. Re: Michigan vs UVA vs Georgetown
It makes sense if Career Services told majority of Mich students to bid Chicago and Chicago tanked that numbers would suck. Not only is there massive competition from all the Michigan students out competing each other for no reason, but if the market shrank dramatically as well, I can see it being a perfect storm.
Poor class of 2011
I would visit and make your call. I have to make a similar decision (15k/year at Mich) and I think I have to wait for final scholarship offers. I'm leaning Mich though because of costs, although honestly 45k isn't much if you're going to be miserable for 3 years.

Yea, my main thing is that I don't want to put myself at a disadvantage( in terms of getting a job in NYC) by going to Mich. vs UVA The most recent numbers could be an anomaly because of this Chicago thing but they just make me nervous.
Does anyone know how the class of 2012 did at their OCI at Michigan?
For the people who voted for UVA: Why? Does it really offer much better prospects in NY?

Why include Georgetown in your poll ? If Southern Fratty types make you uncomfortable & you believe that this culture dominates Virginia, then you need to visit both Virginia & Michigan to determine the better fit for you.
P.S. I didn't vote because you have two outstanding choices that should, in my opinion, be resolved on the basis of personal preference & affordability.

Both Mich and UVA have a boatload of 2011 graduates on paid "fellowships" in order to boost their employment stats for ranking purposes. GULC has a similar pro bono program.

yea I noticed that virginia had 10.9% of its graduates doing a "paid fellowship" in 2010 and georgetown had 10.2% but I cant seem to find any numbers about Michigan. Does anyone know how many of their grads are "employed" through one of these paid fellowships?Geneva wrote:Both Mich and UVA have a boatload of 2011 graduates on paid "fellowships" in order to boost their employment stats for ranking purposes.
