Pick My School!
I am curious as to the thoughts of the TLS community.
173/3.23
want to end up in Texas, but that is not as important to me as being able to pay back my loans and maintain a decent standard of living for myself and my husband (who is a teacher)
(UT would of course be the obvious choice but it is not listed because I got waitlisted, and as I am below the GPA floor.)

I picked WUSTL... this is a tough choice though. It's a top 20 school and they gave you the most scholarship money and if you do well then I think you could place well in Texas. I'm in a similar situation though, so I'll be curious to see what other people have to say. Are you riding out the waitlist at UT? Obviously if you get in then that's where you should go for sure.

I will ride the UT waitlist until the bitter end. : ) Multiple LOCIs, 2 new letters of rec, and visiting as well.ucbkenn wrote:I picked WUSTL... this is a tough choice though. Why don't you just wait for money, especially from Vanderbilt. They are pretty liberal with the cash.

SMU would be a much better option than WUSTL, imo.
SMU's employment data is better in general, and going to a TX school is going to make it so much easier to get a job in TX.
If not SMU, then Vandy or Northwestern.

This. Why are we assuming sticker for Vandy? Pretty sure I read somewhere in my black box that >70% of admits receive merit aid...rad lulz wrote:Why don't you just wait for money, especially from Vanderbilt. They are pretty liberal with the cash.

i was assuming this because of splitter-ness. I figure anything I get would be pretty small anyway.moneybagsphd wrote:This. Why are we assuming sticker for Vandy? A lot of NU kids get TX with ties. Well-trodden road.

I'm really hoping you get vandy money, because if you don't I don't, and I'm dying for it.

FWIW, my GPA (3.6) was about half a letter grade higher with the same LSAT, and I didn't get anything from vanderbilt. They're not very splitter oriented.

Re: Pick My School!
I'd say right now you should be looking at NW, WUSTL, and SMU. I go to WUSTL, and I can tell you that almost everyone I know who is from Texas was able to get back to Texas this summer. It is slowly becoming one of our stronger markets and we had a decent number of firms here for OCI. People also had success with mailers. So I don't think going to school here will hurt your chances at getting back to Texas. Sounds like the same could be said for Northwestern, as IAFG said.
If Vanderbilt comes through with money, add them to the list. And obviously if UT accepts you, I think they move to the top of the list.

Even with 75K or so from Vandy I'd take Northwestern.

Seems pretty straightforward to me: Northwestern.

He does have a Master's degree, which makes it a little easier.

Re: Pick My School!
I would pay sticker to go to Northwestern, but it appears that you might be able to get a little money out of them. I think $84K at WUSTL is an attractive enough choice that you should play them against NU (and any other school for that matter). Ordinarily, NU wouldn't care about WUSTL, but the threat of losing you to WUSTL due to money is real enough because of the economy. Vandy may also give you money, and if you get it you should consider taking it. SMU would obviously be an excellent choice given your goal.rad lulz wrote:Why don't you just wait for money, especially from Vanderbilt. They are pretty liberal with the cash.
Also, stay on the U-Texas waitlist, you never know what will happen.
