wustl w/ money vs. UVA @ sticker
I think I know what everyone will say, but still...
WUSTL offered me 84k. I want to work in the south ideally. I pay out the nose for UVA, yes?

I voted UVA. I assume since you are both splitters there are no middle of the road options like Vandy with 50-60 k or Emory with 3/4 scholly+. I would think both of those would be better than wustl for the south. I like to think this way: with wustl, you can get anywhere, but wustl isn't getting you anywhere. It won't open any doors for you, especially in the south. No matter what your goals are, UVA will open those doors for you. There'll be a lot more UVA alumni you'll run into on the job search in the south than Wustl, whether that's in biglaw, shitlaw, or county attorney's offices. Bottom line: the increased opportunities for even a decent job in the south are well worth the extra 84k to go to UVA.

I definitely think a UVA degree is worth an extra 80k or so investment COL is probably cheaper in Charlottesville than St Louis plus im not sure WashU opens up nearly as many southern markets as UVA does

Its not the southern markets that you need to worry about. Its everywhere else.srfngdd6 wrote:I definitely think a UVA degree is worth an extra 80k or so investment COL is probably cheaper in Charlottesville than St Louis plus im not sure WashU opens up nearly as many southern markets as UVA does

The only way WUSTL would make more sense here is if a member of your family runs a law firm and will hire you after graduation. Otherwise, it's not even close. UVA.

How much debt would you have to take on at each school?

UVA. Far superior placement power and you won't be stuck having to live in the Midwest.

Yeah this. If we were talking about a full ride, it would be closer, but even then I think you would want UVA for the south. For 84k this one is easy. UVA.franklyscarlet wrote:You know how much i love wustl, but with your target markets, I vote UVA.

Be careful. How much would the COA at UVA be for you?

Re: wustl w/ money vs. UVA @ sticker
I think the main issue with WUSTL for a lot of people is that it's in such a small market and it places too broadly. It doesn't have the benefit that GW/BU/BC/UCH/etc have of being in a large city where you can more easily pad your resume by networking with local attorneys and interning/externing during the school year. And the areas that WUSTL does best with are likely to be skeptical of those without ties (St. Louis, KC, Indy, etc).
I think for people without prior ties to the midwest and who don't really want to work in the midwest that WUSTL just doesn't cut it. UVA is going to be a lot riskier at sticker, but I do think it is a far better idea than WUSTL in this scenario.

If you have to gamble with major debt either way, you might as well go all-in and take on the extra debt for UVa. Much better placement, especially in your target market.citykitty wrote:I'm a girl, and I'm looking at 6 figures either way.

UVA, unless WUTSL is a fully scholly and you don't mind working in Saint Louis.

I'm in the same situation. 84k is so tempting, but there seems to be a general consesus that UVA should be the obvious choice.
