Dream school (sticker) vs. Full ride

Post by caloboeist » Wed Feb 01, 2012 7:29 pm

I got in to Wisconsin-Madison, my top choice, espcially since I want to end up in Chicago. ( where I'm originally from.) I've also heard wonderful things about their Criminal clinics which are very enticing to me. However I'm from out of state, so I'd be looking at the full sticker price.

I also got into UConn with a full scholly, which I was thrilled about. However I have no desire to end up in CT and I've heard that job prospects are very low for grads.

Should I take the money and run? Or take out lots of debt for my dream school in the general area I want to be in?

Please help. Thanks!

Don't go to Uconn if you don't want CT. As simple as that.

Probably not the best call to take Wisco for Chicago either.

Why did you apply somewhere you have no interest in? Go to Wisconsin if these are the only options

If you want to work in Wisconsin and get resident tuition then Wisconsin at sticker seems okay ($110k debt). Not great, but not the worst.

If you truly want to work in Chicago then you shouldn't go to either.

WI is your dream school? If you want to work it Chi it might be a better idea to go to Kent or Loyola on a scholly and gun your ass off the first year.

If your goal is to get a job, Wisconsin at sticker if in-state but be OK with working Madison or Milwaukee (no bar exam). You probably won't get to Chicago. If out of state, no way.

According to one of your earlier posts, you are from California & have a 163/3.4. If you have no interest in ending up in Connecticutt, then why did you apply there ? What is the estimated total COA for Wisconsin ? Any other options ? Did you apply to Illinois or to Loyola or Depaul ?

P.S. I understand the attraction to Wisconsin-Madison, but don't count on getting Chicago biglaw to pay off your loans.

If you got a full ride at UConn you would have gotten substantial money from Kent/DePaul/Loyola. You need to go to one of these schools assuming you didn't get into Uof Illinois. If you're Chicago or bust Wisconsin isn't the answer at ALL.
