LLM?

Post by 2xHarvard » Mon Oct 24, 2011 12:38 pm

Sorry - is TLS just for JD candidates and students or can we discuss LLM prospects too?

Would love to hear how any LLMs out there (at whatever stage of your candidacy or post-graduation) decided upon their school and program of study and how you are enjoying / did enjoy the program.

Thanks!

Also interested, I'm thinking of an LLM as a back up plan/safety valve.

New consensus is actually moving toward NYU or GULC only. But tax LLM is a hard road and isn't really a backup for anything.

I guess we're not talking about foreign lawyers getting U.S. LL.M. degrees, then. I wasn't sure from the original post.

Tax LL.M.s are very expensive and may not be worth it in career terms. If you are interested in tax law, go look at http://www.taxtalent.com

No other area than tax really requires an LL.M. There's little evidence beyond the occasional anecdote to suggest that non-tax degrees are worth the time and expense invested. But these days, I suppose that the same thing could be said of 90% of the J.D, degrees out there!

What if you could get the LLM free as a joint to another program you're doing. Would it inherently hurt you other than the cost and time you spend on it? Someone did mention that LLMs actually hurt your resume if you had it in addition to a JD, but I'm not sure.
