Loyola (LA) vs. Pepperdine

Post by ellnino9 » Mon Aug 15, 2011 6:50 pm

Hey all, first time poster, I was wondering if the wise folks of TLS could help me out on this small dilemma:

So I have just been offered a spot from Loyola (I literally just got off the phone with the admissions adviser) and orientation is tomorrow

The problem is, I've basically committed myself to Pepperdine, at which I am unfortunately paying sticker this year (I had a sub 3.0 gpa at a top ranked UC, and a mid to high 160 lsat). I've already paid the first semester tuition and bought all my books, though I don't see why I won't get a refund for these things if I were to choose not to attend Pepperdine. The good thing is, I'm staying at a family friends for the time being so haven't committed anything to housing.

Now in all likelihood I'd have to pay sticker at Loyola as well.

So please help me TLS! What's my move here?

P.s. the admissions adviser told me to call her back by 5:30 pm. So basically I have less than 2 hours to decide the next 3 years of my life. Weeeeeee

You should withdraw from Pepperdine immediately and get all of your money back before it's too late. And with regards to Loyola, don't go there; too much money for far too little in return. Instead, retake/reapply or don' to go to law school.

Both these schools have a similar rank. Pepperdine has it specialties and Loyola has theirs. Loyola has the 3 year LLM/JD program in tax law. Are you interested in tax law? Do you like Los Angeles or Malibu more? Off of my gut feeling, I would go with Pepperdine. They took you in while Loyola wants to shove you in their class as a last minute effort? Pepperdine obviously believes you have something to offer to their school more than LLS.

They're both so-so schools that will substantially restrict your practice opportunities to the LA area. My sense is that LLS is better, mainly because it has a better alumni network. But they're close enough that you can probably just visit the two and pick whichever one gives you a better feel. I highly doubt that there are any options open to top-X% at LLS but not top-X% at PLS.

At the moment I think Pepperdine is a much better school than Loyola. You have a better chance of getting a job out of Pepperdine. Their support Departments are amazing. My one concern is the new Dean. I think she is out of her depth. I don't know what she has done yet to enhance the school.
