Need Help ASAP -- ASU vs GWU

Post by sublimer42 » Thu Jul 21, 2011 4:49 pm

*Edit - Got a phone call from ASU - $20,000 for the first year, 10,000 2nd - - Said should be able to get residency because I am financially independent. With no substantial gain in scholarship I think I am leaning toward GWU now. I am also going to add an option to reapply to NU onto my poll. Thanks

Hi everybody,

Been using this website for advice and info for a couple years now but never posted - great website and very smart posters.

I need to make a decision in the next few days-

Put down deposits at GWU ($14,000 need based grant) but have not found a place - difficult because I have a large dog and would like to be very close to the school.

Just got an email from ASU saying that they have more scholarship funds available and to email them if I am interested - my original scholarship was $15,000 1st year, $10,000 second year. I stated in the email that I would like to see that raised and extended for the three years with in-state tuition if possible.

Would most likely want to end up back in California or surrounding states because of family - but if were able to land a job I loved I would be open to the East Coast. The move would be a lot easier to AZ with the dog, and it would be easier to find a house for lower rent.

DC would be a lot more of an exciting place to live: I really like museums, political events ..etc however not so much into the busyness of the city, traffic, etc.

I would probably find the actual city in Arizona kind of boring- but would enjoy having my own quiet house to study -with a pool to have easy access to exercise, fresh air, and fun with my dog which may all add up to having less stress and stronger performance in school - I also like the access to nature - hikes, lakes etc.

Stats: GPA very low from screwed up 1st year at community college- 2.89 cum LSAC -- but graduated Cum Laude from my university.
LSAT - 165, 167, 174
This is second year applying - turned down 20k at Minnesota and WUSTL for GW.
1st year no scholarships, accepted Penn State, USF, Chapman

If I rank in the top 10% at either school I would probably try and transfer to a T14 or use as leverage to get scholarship at GW. Nobody would recommend sitting out another year reapplying again with my stats right?

Well I realize this is speculative until I hear back from ASU so I will update when I hear back.

Thanks for the help.

First off, what is the total cost of attendance for each school?

I can say that I wouldn't attend GWU with only 14k in grants.

Also, I think that it would be difficult to return to CA from either. Though, you said 'surrounding states', and Arizona is a surrounding state, which means ASU might be the better option.

Why not get a few years of work experience and apply to NU?

Yeah, try to get a job and then ED NU.

If you MUST go now, ASU. But seriously, you got a 174.

You don't think it's risky to assume I will be accepted to Northwestern? It looks like LSN gives me about a 50/50 shot?

ED NU is fairly close to a lock with a 174 and some WE. Two years of WE would be better.

+1. Your LSAT can take you to better places than ASU (do not even consider GWU). Just get a job and work for a few years to distance yourself from your awful GPA.

dont yall think 2.89 is even a little low for NU based on LSN stats? looks like 3.0 would be a safe bet for non-URM. but 2.89 + 174 is still a 50/50 toss up for OP.

also 1 other thing to consider: NU likes substantive WE, i.e. consulting, banking, business, engineering. not paralegal, non-profit, starbucks.

id just pick ASU for the $$$ plus if OP wants to live in CA, GW wont carry a lot of weight there outside of IP.

Also worth mentioning: forget about the "if I'm in the top 10%, I'm going transfer" business. If you're choosing where to go with the intention to transfer, you're doing it wrong.

I think too many people underestimate the ability of ASU Law grads to find good jobs in California.

+1.

There are already way too many law schools in CA.

ASU if you must go now. Northwestern is really worth that shot compared to your other options.
