Emory with $48K scholly or BU with $30K. 3 days to choose!!
HELP!
I was just pulled off the waitlist at BU, had already mentally committed myself to a nice 3 years at Emory with an amazing standard of living (what with the weather, living situation, southern friendliness, etc.), which I think I need after living in NYC all my life. If I went to Emory I would try like hell to come back north afterwards but would be ok with working in ATL if need be. I want to work biglaw either in NYC/Boston/Chicago/DC until my grades tell me otherwise (here's hoping).
Finances: The schollys matter to me, but only if everything else was absolutely equal. At Emory, there is the additional expense of leasing a car, but at BU, coL is higher. I'm also not too worried about Emory's rep long term.
Question: which will put me in the best position after finishing? I already have a connection to NYC, and both schools have a good alumni presence there (so they say). Are my chances significantly better at BU? What if I end up in the middle of the pack at either school?
Does anyone want to convince me in favor of BU? I have to answer by Monday.

BU, not close given where you want to work.
But just to cover all bases, what are the costs of attendance at each?

BU based on the fact that you prefer NYC/Boston.
If you wanted to work in the south then Emory is the winner, but you don't.

cost of attending:
BU ~$42K + living
Emory ~ $45K + living + car + flights home (maybe not such a big deal)
with the money offered, comes out to $32K at BU and $29K at Emory. Emory becomes more expensive once you add the other stuff. I guess this is a pretty clear cut answer, but I can also try to negotiate more from either school.

You want to work in the area so BU seems like the best choice. The col and expenses will be high but it'll pay off in the end because you'll have a degree from a strong school in the area you want to work.

This. BU is the right call for your situation, but there's no reason not to try for a bit more money. Even if they say no, it's still the best option for you.protein wrote:Go to BU, but use emory's offer to negotiate more money
