This isn't what you asked, but if you want Boston why not BU/BC with $$?

Unless you want to keep the Chicago market as an option, choose based on where you'd rather spend 3 years. They will be similar in placement with NU probably having an edge in big law and UVA doing better with clerkships, but that's probably due to student choices and not the schools.

I've thought about it but...cinephile wrote:This isn't what you asked, but if you want Boston why not BU/BC with $$?
1) I'm very fortunate in that I will not need to take out loans (or at least large ones)
2) As much as I love New England I feel like it would be good to live somewhere else even briefly.
I would assume either of these schools place as well as BC/BU in Boston. Am I off base there?

No, provided you have preexisting ties to the region. The Boston legal market is very insular.jacksonmead wrote: I would assume either of these schools place as well as BC/BU in Boston? Am I off base there?

In that case, choose the school/location where you'd be happier.

Re: Northwestern vs. UVA
14 Boston offices went to OCI at NU vs. 20 for UVA. Given the class size difference, that seems pretty much like a wash. If you don't have a huge preference for either, I'd say you should go with UVA. For one the COA is a little cheaper. You also have a great chance at an acceptance at either school, but it seems like there are more UVA data points to evaluate. If you get your app in early during September, you should have great shot and if you do somehow get waitlisted you'll know within a week or two so you can proceed from there. TCR though is probably to visit both schools and see which one you get a better vibe from.

You could try NYU maybe. Other than that, any MVP Id think would be best. I dont really see much advantage of NW over mvp. UVA or Penn for location perhaps

Agree that Penn or NYU are better choices if you are targeting Boston.

I'm not a big fan of New York (as evidenced in my employment location preference) and studying there for three years sounds especially unpleasant.
I don't mind Philly, but are chances for Boston really much different from Penn than UVA?

Penn is generally more BigLaw focused than UVA. That, on top of the closer geopgraphy and slightly better ranking would, I assume, give an advantage to Pennjacksonmead wrote:I'm not a big fan of New York (as evidenced in my employment location preference) and studying there for three years sounds especially unpleasant.

NU's biglaw placement is equivalent to MVP (with maybe Penn doing better in the V10).Law Sauce wrote:You could try NYU maybe. Other than that, any MVP Id think would be best. I dont really see much advantage of NW over mvp. UVA or Penn for location perhaps

I don't know that he should spend his ED on NYU or Penn, when his GPA is auto-reject at those schools.

Why no Penn? I would imagine their Boston placement is better than either UVA or NW.jacksonmead wrote:Hi folks,

I'm planning on throwing out the ol' ED but still deciding where... my career goals are Biglaw in Boston (I think I could show pretty good ties.)
Is there an appreciable difference between NW and UVA's chances at Boston firms? I'd love any input from people at either school.

Definitely not an auto-reject at Penn and I would call his chances slim at NYU but not auto-reject.Z3RO wrote:I don't know that he should spend his ED on NYU or Penn, when his GPA is auto-reject at those schools.

If you dont love the idea of doing law school in a big city then UVA is your best option. Michigan is probably about the same too.jacksonmead wrote:I'm not a big fan of New York (as evidenced in my employment location preference) and studying there for three years sounds especially unpleasant.
