WUSTL (45/year) vs UChi (20/year)
I'm an STL native with no interest in PI. I will end up working in either St. Louis or Chicago. I have no interest in any other market. I recently got off of the waitlist at UChi, and I have until Thursday to make a decision. At the time I applied, I had a 3.98 (now a 3.94...oops) and a 173 (retake). My greatest concern about Chicago is being forced to work a job that I hate to pay off debt. WUSTL would leave me with a substantially smaller amount of debt, and I would be ok with staying in St. Louis. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated. I really don't know what to do.

The "no interest in PI" secured my U of C vote.

WUSTL has a significantly greater chance of leaving you with no job at all and you would still have debt. Chicago all the way.

I think the much greater job prospects outweigh this debt consideration. For the record though, I turned down WUSTL $$$ to go to Chicago with $ this fall.buckwheat wrote:I'm an STL native with no interest in PI. I will end up working in either St. Louis or Chicago. I have some money saved. I'd have VERY little debt from WUSTL. UChi would leave me with ~110k of debt.

Then go to Chicago. If you don't know, you'll want options. And $110k debt from Chicago is not bad at all, especially considering you don't want PI.buckwheat wrote:That is a really good question.Dany wrote:What do you want to do after law school?

Are you planning on living at home if you stay in StL? Or would you still be responsible for cost of living expenses at both schools?

I won't live at home. I don't care how much money it would save. The commute would frustrate me immensely.cbp3443 wrote:Are you planning on living at home if you stay in StL? Or would you still be responsible for cost of living expenses at both schools?
Why Chicago? Do you think it is the best choice for me? Or just the higher ranked school?

Muenchen had a similar thread going earlier in the cycle, maybe it would help.

It's the better school at a great price and offers you the most flexibility with jobs since you aren't sure what you want to do.buckwheat wrote:Why Chicago? Do you think it is the best choice for me? Or just the higher ranked school?

If you want St. Louis, you need to be in the top 90% at Chicago, like 12% at WUSTL?. Also... If you are really that debt averse, Chicago is much more likely to help you get a full-summer split your 2L year, and is may even get you a 1L gig your first year (as one St. Louis kid did I know of my year). You honestly might be able to cover the full scholarship difference 1L summer (24k) and full 2L summer (51k if split efficiently).
Also, you do not know where you will end up on the curve and if you think you do, you are suffering from HUGE optimism bias. In fact, the competition may be more intense at WUSTL (where everyone is in a deathmatch for limited $$$ jobs) than at Chicago.
