If you fall in love with a school, I can't imagine that 30k out of a 200k debt load is going to matter more than happiness for three years and the likely grade/work benefits that come from being excited about your school. Others would probably disagree, but that seems the case to me - that amount of money should be a tiebreaker if you're legitimately torn between the two schools, not if you're in love with one and talking yourself into the second.hotthaichick wrote:I'm making this same decision and U Chicago just gave me $30,000 total compared to nothing from NYU (where I'm deposited). It's so hard because I completely fell in love with NYU and New York but now I'm wondering if Chicago would end up being a more sound decision. Especially with the vastly lower cost of living. I need help...

Now I'm torn between both schools though... Chicago is actually a really awesome place and the people I met were wonderful. And to complicate matters, Chicago was my dream school initially and then I fell in love with NYU after I got in and so I have love for both schools.
I hope I have an epiphany before Monday.

$30,000 seems epiphany-inducing to me.

Well then I think the choice is simple. 220k vs. 180k when you factor in COL and difference in scholarship. You love both schools, but your dream school was Chicago (assuming that was after some research), and it's easy to fall in love with a school at an ASW.hotthaichick wrote:Now I'm torn between both schools though... Unless you are gungho for PI (though Chicago's new LRAP is great, NYU has the edge with an extensive network in place for PI) or Manhattan, Chicago is TCR.

Pretty sure I'm going with Chicago at this point though.

you're forgetting UChicago's new LRAP. since you don't want biglaw, I think that should make this a done deal

hmm based on both of your options, can't go wrong either way. but seeing your situation with aid and location/practice preference, UChi seems like the place for both of you. do you mind sharing where you decided to go?

Re: U Chicago or NYU?
congrats for getting 30K from chicago!!
i think i would choose NYU still though. It is true that 30K is a lot of money. . .it also isn't that big if you look at the big picture. just being in ny will give you more opportunities especially when nyu and uchicago are peer schools (although i still think nyu carries a bigger weight in law)

I'm an 0L, and I want to work in New York after I graduate. I recently chose Chicago over NYU.trudat15 wrote:Well then I think the choice is simple. 220k vs. 180k when you factor in COL and difference in scholarship. That said, I LOVED NYU when I visited it. Very very much much. I came home from ASW and told everyone I knew where'd I'd be in the Fall.
As awesome as NYU is, Chicago is also awesome (maybe even awesomer). Unless you neeeeeed to be in NYC, you know what to do.

Not to be a huge Chicago troll, but I seriously doubt this is even close to true.arthur wrote:(although i still think nyu carries a bigger weight in law)

A pretty silly statement with no evidence whatsoever, aside from the fact that arthur thinks this.Dany wrote:Not to be a huge Chicago troll, but I seriously doubt this is even close to true.arthur wrote:(although i still think nyu carries a bigger weight in law)
It's also more than 30k when you factor in COL and higher COA at NYU every year.arthur wrote: It is true that 30K is a lot of money. . .it also isn't that big if you look at the big picture. just being in ny will give you more opportunities especially when nyu and uchicago are peer schools (although i still think nyu carries a bigger weight in law)
Also fail to see how being in NY vs. Chicago will give you more opportunities as a law student.
