Rothman Scholar... To good to pass up?
So I was reading up about the Rothman (didnt get offered) and I was just wondering if like most SA positions, you are almost guaranteed a job at Skadden? I know it cant be guaranteed, none of them are, but most people get offers right? does this stay for this guaranteed 1L SA spot?
If so how could you pass that up?

I would bet that the offer rate isn't nearly as high as the offer rate for 2L SA's, but I have no idea.

I have heard most people get a 2L SA offer after a 1L SA, but maybe this is not the case. Its just the only scholly I have heard of that gives that kind of opportunity

A TLS member was awarded the scholarship, and passed it up to go to S.AssumptionRequired wrote:And only 1 student gets it.... I thought it was multiple, thats impressive.
How they can give it up
1) you can get biglaw anyway from S, and aren't stuck w/ just Skadden
2) they didnt' seem to want biglaw at all anyway.

Plus, Stanford's need-based aid was so generous for this individual that a USC full ride wasn't that much cheaper.weee wrote:A TLS member was awarded the scholarship, and passed it up to go to S.AssumptionRequired wrote:And only 1 student gets it.... I thought it was multiple, thats impressive.

According to the administrators of the scholarship, Rothman Scholars--at least in recent years--have always been extended a full-time offer at Skadden after their 1L summer associates. However, not everyone takes it. (I believe some have pursued federal clerkships or PI.)

This is interesting to hear thank you. Congrats on getting offered one. I think, for me at least, that would be hard to pass up as I love socal and grew up there and would love to work in LA.neonx wrote:According to the administrators of the scholarship, Rothman Scholars--at least in recent years--have always been extended a full-time offer at Skadden after their 1L summer associates. Now that you turned it down will they give to to the runner up? I am assuming they cannot offer multiple until they receive the notion that it will not be accepted.

Was wondering this too. A free education at USC and a job at skadden isnt a bad combo to have.

They will trickle down the list of four finalists until someone accepts, I believe. I think this year is the first time they've had to call more than one person to extend a Rothman offer. (The scholarship has only been around for less than a decade.)
I loved USC when I was there, and everyone was very friendly and helpful. Ultimately, it came down to a personal choice/visceral reaction. (However, the process involved a lot of deep contemplation about what I want from my life and long conversations with loved ones to come to terms with eventually declining the offer.)

As Neonx mentioned most (all?) of the Rothmans got offers after their 1L SA, how nice would that be!BeachandRun23 wrote:Was wondering this too. A free education at USC and a job at skadden isnt a bad combo to have.
But I will say if you are not looking for big law or not looking to live in LA, then it is not worth it. Personally I THINK I would take this over HYS just because of that guaranteed 1L SA at a V5 firm, which will likely turn into a job.
