NYU $ v. Penn $$$??? - Edited
Heavily PI-oriented. Love NYC, cool with Philly, just want to get a good education and have great opportunities for internships and jobs. Interested in working overseas and domestically. Will be taking advantage of LRAP programs at both schools, given low-paying career I will inevitably enter upon graduating, but obviously, debt burden will depend greatly with which school I choose. I know NYU is stronger in PI, but is it THAT much stronger?

EDIT: Error on award letter/my overeagerness led to an incorrect initial posting of Penn scholarship. Real award is now reflected above. Sorry for the confusion!

60k v 204k...I'd say rationally Penn, no question. 204k? That is not just full tuition that is also COL!..At MVPB? Also, I personally think Penn is awesome.
If you pick NYU you probably won't regret it - it is a T6 in an unbeatable location (if you like big ciites), great PI opportunities and a great LRAP... but Penn no debt will give you so many options and allow you to avoid debt stress that 90% of law students have to deal with - in this case I'd pick Penn in a heartbeat.

Re: NYU $ v. Penn $$$???
I was going to say NYU due to its strength in placing students with fine PI jobs on the moon, but since your content working merely domestically or overseas I think Penn with $204 might suffice... Lol really though congrats on putting yourself in an amazing situation. Huge disparity in money would make this an easy decision for me. If the money isn't important to you NYU in a heartbeat, but I can't imagine the money doesnt matter to you at all. If so, I am jealous.

Re: NYU $ v. Penn $$$???
Fellow PI person here.
If it were me, I'd take the money. I figure if I want to do PI so as to help people, then it would be great to have the personal financial freedom to follow that road wherever it takes me. There's just so much flexibility in not having any debt.
Plus, if you have that much money from Penn it must be a named scholarship which will look stellar on your resume -- better than "NYU" if I had to guess.

Why does Penn's LRAP "suck"? Is it really that different from NYU's?

If you make over 55k at penn, they take sixty percent of your income. Nyus lrap with ibr doesn't start taking anything away from you (no payments!!) til 75k.neyaae wrote:Why does Penn's LRAP "suck"? Is it really that different from NYU's?

Look it up... Penn handed out an lrap comparison pamphlet at Asw. I have no idea why since it makes them look awful next to everyone elsebk187 wrote:This doesn't add up...

I was referring to the 204k scholarship at Penn and then the "taking advantage of LRAPs at both schools."mcweanis wrote:Look it up... Penn handed out an lrap comparison pamphlet at Asw. I have no idea why since it makes them look awful next to everyone else

The 204K for the toll is a typo -- should be 120K. Confirmed with office today.

Re: NYU $ v. Penn $$$???
True -- just assuming. Never heard of a 204K scholarship anywhere, and understood that the largest award Penn gives is the Levy, which is full tuition (roughly 150K).

True - initial letter was wrong actually. So it's not 204K (I should've known but got excited and didn't do the math, then felt sheepish once I did), it's 118K. So, thanks for all your input everyone, and sorry for being a dumby!

I'd vote Penn.
I don't think NYU's PI advantage is worth the extra risk.
