BC vs UGA vs UF ($) vs Fordham ($$) international applicant

Post by pferaso » Mon Apr 11, 2011 7:32 pm

Hi!!
I am an international applicant from Colombia-South America. I´ve narrowed my options to:

Fordham (10k x year)
BC sticker
UGA sticker (possible scholarship)
UF (8k x year)
Retake LSAT and reapply

My priorities are 1) find a secure job upon graduation and 2) earn enough money to pay debt.

I do not have any preferred region where to work in the U.S

If you want to, please give me the reasons for your vote.

Thanks!!!!

I do not have any preferred region where to work in the U.S. however, I would like to know your opinions regarding job prospects for a lawyer whose undergraduate degree was obtained in Colombia (the country, not the university).
I am specially curious about my marketability in Massachusetts and Georgia.
If you want to, please give me the reasons for your vote.

Thanks!!!!
BC.

I have no idea why U-Fla. with only $8,000 a year is winning this poll, but the job prospects are by far the best at Boston College and Fordham. BC > Fordham >> UGa >> UF. Since you're out-of-state at Florida, you're not going to save a ton of money there. If you had a full-ride at UF or UGa, those would be the best choices... otherwise, it's BC or Fordham.

Even with $10,000 a year, Fordham is probably just as expensive as BC at sticker... BC is a bit better in the job market (and much better in Massachusetts, a specific market you asked about) so BC is my final answer.

Keep in mind that you get in-state at UGA after 1L (which is 14k a year I think). So that may affect your calculations.

I asked UGA about this possibility and they ruled it out since I am not a U.S. resident....

Really? Even after your first year? Ehh I guess it's due to getting visas and whatnot.. something I know nothing of.

None of those. All of those schools with that kind of money are pretty risky since you're an international applicant and can't get govt. loans. Reapply dawg.

Boston is the easy choice in this situation.

Agree. Go to a place where you'll have little to no debt. If something goes wrong with your visa and you can't work, not only you, but also your loan co-signer will be in the line of fire.

You`re probably right. Which schools would be worth sticker in your opinion and why??? and which LSAT would give me decent money at BC???

For me? Average applicant, assuming full complement of loans? HYSCCN. For what LSAT you need for money, check lawschoolnumbers.com.

I'd say the top 12 schools or so are the ones I would pay sticker at because they give you (at minimum) a roughly 50/50 shot at getting a job that can pay back loans in a reasonable amount of time.
