What is better for getting biglaw in Texas?
I am curious what people think would be a better option for getting biglaw in TX? While I hope to get to DC, I know it's rough out there, and I would be fine with TX (2nd choice market). Just curious.
Duke (at 35k more)
or UT-Austin
From TX
dont want NYC (or any NEastern city), dont want deep south either (would be fine with ATL though)

You're from TX, so Duke.

Dude/Dudette... um, you see the poll up top?TheThreader wrote:135 at duke

What I just quoted only reinforces that. You get what you want at a lower price... and you haven't posted a "I get it folks, decision made" post yet?

OP:
Duke gives you a better chance at getting TX BigLaw. This might be one of the few chances you have to live outside of TX. Consider Duke.

The title of this thread is suuuuuper misleading. The reason everyone that posted in the thread has said "Duke" is because they read your post and saw that you want DC first. The reason why the voting says UT is because those people didn't read the OP.
Duke won't keep you from getting biglaw in Texas and it will give you a much better chance at DC.

The poll heading is clear: Which law school is better for getting Biglaw in Texas. He may prefer DC, but that isn't the poll question.

Yeah, because that was OP's intention... to ask which school places better in Texas... because COA figures matter so much for that question...CanadianWolf wrote:The poll heading is clear: Which law school is better for getting Biglaw in Texas. He may prefer DC, but that isn't the poll question.

"Which is better for TX biglaw?"
Seems pretty clear.
The OP continues: "I am curious what people think would be a better option for getting biglaw in Texas."

If you consider DC your top choice, then Duke is definitely the easiest vehicle of your choices to get there.
AND
It would be tougher to get from Texas to DC than it would be to get from Duke to Texas.
Logically, Duke makes more sense. Especially when you say Atlanta is among your choices. Duke outplaces Texas everywhere but Texas which is largely due to self selection.

Re: What is better for getting biglaw in Texas?
Ok so I kind of posted that last reply without reading the other replies and I wanted to clarify something I said. As an ancillary point I noted that Duke is only outplaced by Texas in Texas mainly because of self selection.
That should have been my main point. And I should have emphasized that it really is self selection that causes it to appear that Duke is "outplaced" in Texas.
Placement is an odd issue to tackle. Yeah, you can say more TX grads get big law in TX than Duke grads, but that does not merit the assumption that in a TX biglaw hiring matchup a TX grad is more likely to beat a Duke grad.

Re: What is better for getting biglaw in Texas?
Look, it all depends on how well you're going to do in your class. If you're top 20% at UT, you probably have a better chance at getting a TX biglaw job than say top 40% at Duke. That being said, the networking at UT is way stronger inside Texas so even if you were lower in the class at UT, you're chances are better for firm jobs inside the state. Texas law firms (even the big law branches in Texas) LOVE Texas grads. I'm from Texas so I say UT....plus, by going to Texas, it's not like you've ruled out your options for going to DC either...
Also, do you want to be 1 Duke grad in a sea of all the other Texas schools without any kind of alumni networking support? I say Texas all the way.

well I would have "ties" and the fact that everyone from TX wants the same jobs is kind of concerning. At Duke, most people dont want these jobs, so there is less competition.

Your intuition is right. Go to Duke.TheThreader wrote:well I would have "ties" and the fact that everyone from TX wants the same jobs is kind of concerning. At Duke, most people dont want these jobs, so there is less competition.

If the poll only allowed people who have actually been through OCI to vote then I bet Duke would be winning.
