Michigan vs USC vs Georgetown $$$ all around
Yo what up fools,
These aren't the only schools i got into, but they are the only I'm considering at this point. I got 15k a year at Michigan, 25k a year at USC, and Georgetown gave me some Dean's Tuition non-sense for like 12k + workstudy.
I'm en route to visit Michigan and Georgetown, so have no real concept of either at this point. I do know that Georgetown sucks at getting people appointed to clerkships and smells over-rated.
Oh, that and everyone I've talked to over the phone has been pretty rude at G-Town, while I received equally rude treatment in person at USC. (Law schools: If you want to people attend, try screening / monitoring the bozo law students making a mockery of their work study positions. Seriously...aside from the folks at U of Mich, everyone I've talked to that sounded student workerish has been ignorant / rude.)
I'm a SoCal native, so USC is still in the running thanks to their cool 25k.
Decide my fate!

I'd say it's a choice between UMich and USC and I'd probably go to UMich even if you want to end up back in SoCal.
If you want anywhere other than SoCal, it is easily Michigan, and even for SoCal, USC is going to cost you around $140k so not cheap enough to justify turning down Michigan.

This, but it's definitely worth trying to leverage your Georgetown scholly. They offered you some pretty sweet cash.bk187 wrote:I'd say it's a choice between UMich and USC and I'd probably go to UMich even if you want to end up back in SoCal.

Am I reading it wrong? Didn't they offer less than Michigan?HeavenWood wrote:This, but it's definitely worth trying to leverage your Georgetown scholly. They offered you some pretty sweet cash.

Maybe I'm reading it wrong. I read the Georgetown scholly as full tuition plus 12k. Keep in mind that I'm running on very little sleep.bk187 wrote:Am I reading it wrong? Haha no problem. Actually the title had me a bit confused because I went in assuming there was a big GULC scholly in the table when it had $$$ next to its name.HeavenWood wrote:Maybe I'm reading it wrong. I would go Michigan. The biggest problem of taking your degree to CA would be if you didn't have any ties or anything to demonstrate interest in the area, which might make firms raise an eyebrow - but that isn't the case here. UMich places very well in CA, and if you ever change your mind about where you want to go after graduation (yes, it happens), you'll definitely have more freedom to do so.

I really like the DC area, and think Ann Arbor blows (mind you I visited both in the Winter).
Should that really affect my decision or should I just man up and become a Wolverine?

Where did you go in Ann Arbor that blows? The law campus is sweet, and down town (Main Street, not State Street) is nice.

It should affect your decision, but how much you're able to experience Ann Arbor or DC while you're in law school is going to be pretty questionable. I know of people here who chose Michigan over NYU because even though they loved NYC, they thought it would be way too much of a distraction from their studies (I don't know how true this is, but it does make sense not to choose a school based on the city you would most like to hang out or go on vacation in).molomloch wrote:I really like the DC area, and think Ann Arbor blows (mind you I visited both in the Winter).

Are my prospects for big law / big corporate / big government really going to be significantly worse if I pass up Michigan for G-town?

I would do Michigan. It definitely has better prospects than Georgetown, plus with cost of living its even the cheaper option (also, wait till you visit, UM is awesome).

Biglaw yes.molomloch wrote:Are my prospects for big law / big corporate / big government really going to be significantly worse if I pass up Michigan for G-town?
Bigcorp yes. (Because this is going to be based off of you getting biglaw and then going inhouse down the road. This will not be available to either at graduation.)
Biggov dunno. (They might be equal? I can't really tell. I would hazard that the difference between Mich and GULC is smaller in this regard than it is for the above two.)

Does anyone have any statistics to back up Michigan's superiority? Or, rather, (as a less annoying alternative question), where would be a good source of data to answer such a question?

Definitely try to talk to people in hiring positions where you want to work also figure out which national firms socal offices recruit at OCI at these schools. I would guess that michigan is TCR but SoCal can be suuuuuper weird.
