Cycle (basically) done...where do YOU think I should go?
Okay, I was held at Harvard and have not yet heard from Yale, but I doubt I get into either of those. So, here are my options. Tell me what you think.
Some background...I have lived in and around Detroit for much of my life and I love it. Almost all my significant family and friends are here, and I would not mind living and working here the rest of my life. I know that seems strange to most here, but it is what it is. I am also intrigued by NYC and part of me wants to take the plunge and live life in the greatest city on Earth.
I've been going back an forth in my mind on this, so I will see what TLS has to say...
One caveat: this is NOT a "Detroit is terrible" thread.

Have you sat down and calculated predicted total COA for each school? I'm not sure if that might sway your decision.
Also, could you post more on what you want to do with your JD? I mean, I could pick which of those schools I'd want to go to if I were you, but that's not your question and I have different reasons for wanting to go to LS. What are yours?
Edit: your LSN profile seems fairly complete, but I did have a few other questions:
- have you yet visited any of the schools?
- do you have any ties to any other regions outside of Detroit?
- how much debt will you finish your MA with?

-Goals: well-paying job in a firm in either Detroit or NYC (have not yet decided). I do not have a 160,000 biglaw or bust mentality, though that would certainly be welcome.gochrisgo wrote:Have you sat down and calculated predicted costs over 3 years for each school? -Predicted costs: Difference between three years at CLS/NYU vs UMich is about 100,000 dollars (have fairly cheap cost of living here).
-I have yet to visit any of the schools. My current schedule, along with my current financial situation makes visiting the schools quite difficult (especially the ones in NYC!).
-I have no other noteworthy ties to other regions.
-Most of my MA was funded, so I will finish with only about 6,000 in educational debt.

Would you have to borrow the whole cost of attendance not covered by scholly?

$100k is a lot of money, and if you're already comfortable with the area, then I'd say UMich is the clear choice here.

You like it and want to live there. Are you pretty sure? Then Michigan, clearly.
If you are full of doubt and a lust for adventure, there is no reason you'd be disappointed by Columbia. And if you get into H/Y, obviously go.

If your goal is to live around Detroit, I see no reason not to take Michigan in this case unless you REALLY want to experience NYC.

The poll is pointing strongly to Michigan, which is where I was leaning as well. I guess it will give me the chance to get into the NYC market if I change my mind in the next year or so.
It's just so hard to turn down that Columbia name. The prestige whore part of me keeps coming back to that, haha.

I agree here. Michigan seems like your best option.ndirish2010 wrote:Ummm....Michigan. Not close.
