BC v. Miami - I NEED opinions...
Hi All,
Months ago I decided I would go to UMIAMI because they gave me $$. If I go there, I will leave school owing $60,000. I'm sparing you all the breakdown of expenses and scholarships, but that's the number. I also got into BC, but with no money - of coooourse! If I go there, I will leave school owing $130,000. BC is ranked around 25th (guesstimating) and UM is 77th. Huge difference!
I've grown up and lived in South Fl my entire life. I wanted to go to Boston in undergrad but didn't because I felt I was too young. Now I'm starting law school at 23 and I'm stuck in the same position. I know many of you are probably trying to figure out a similar situation and I'd LOVE to hear from you. I haven't put a seat deposit down anywhere yet and I'm starting to feel I need to take the opportunity to live in Boston this time around...
Please give me your opinions! I'm scared of debt!

How are you going to leave BC 130k in debt? Do you have savings or a free place to stay or something?

Im in a pretty similar situation - I'm in at BU vs Miami with a 75% scholarship. But honestly I'm not even considering Miami. It depends on your personal goals and aspirations - I know I REALLY want go into transactional law and eventually go in-house, and the odds of doing that from Miami are slim to none. So while it may be cheap, it doesn't stand a great chance of actually providing me with anything.
So I'd choose BC in your situation, but if you're fine with staying in South Florida and are fine with the significant possibility of working a mediocre legal job if you are employed (immigration, foreclosures, bankruptcy, dui - the biggest legal sectors in Florida) then go with Miami.

Yes, I do. Savings and some money from parents bring it down to 130,000.

BC. hands down. unless you want to do public sector work or are extremely debt aversive but to me it seems insanely obvious. if you make a poll you can probably get more opinions IMO.

You guys seem pretty certain. So if I want to have the option to ever move out of South Fl, BC is worth the 130,000?

The difference between $130,000 and $60,000 is only $70,000. So, yes.clair de lune wrote:You guys seem pretty certain. So if I want to have the option to ever move out of South Fl, BC is worth the 130,000?

Few schools are really worth sticker. I'd say probably only the schools that give you a 30% or more chance at biglaw are worth taking the risk of going to law school. BC is one of the few that are worth the cost.
Also, if you don't get biglaw, you will still have much better options at Midlaw or goverment work from BC.
