USC VS. Pepperdine(with scolly)

Post by Ash;-) » Mon Mar 21, 2011 9:45 pm

Hi everyone..

i have been admitted to USC and Pepperdine. Pepperdine is offering me 20k per year with stip of being in top 30%, and USC is at sticker price. now I am trying to figure out which one i should choose...

by the way there is high chance that i would try to get into the JD/MBA program at either school after the first year

i would appreciate any advice specially if it is well reasoned... thanks in advance

That seems like a pretty strict stipulation. From everything I understand, your class ranking isn't entirely up to you. To me, such a harsh requirement looks more like Pepperdine @ sticker v USC @ sticker. If you were going to ask Pepperdine at sticker, I think you'd have difficulty finding someone on this site who would tell you to go for it. And there you have your answer.

USC. Every. Single. Time.

That top 30% stipulation is not worth it.

You would be surprised. Lots of people take and keep the scholy money, and some people don't dig on going to school in USCs neighborhood.

Op, if you are considering the JD/MBA, you should go for USC. The program there is very well respected.

To make this a worthy conversation, you need to go back to Pepperdine and tell them to give you more money, using your USC acceptance as leverage. Then tell them to lose the stipulation.

If you accomplish both of these, then there is somewhat of a debate.

Coming from a UCLA student who hates USC. . . go to USC unless pepperdine gave you a full ride with no stips (from what I've heard they just about always have stipulations).

as a recent SC alum this drives me nuts. the neighborhood isn't westwood but jesus if you hadn't seen it and only went on TLS/lay opinion you'd think USC is smack in the middle of south-central LA or something. the campus is spotless and the immediate area next to campus where students would live is also safe. I'm pretty sure they let you know that the crime rate at UCLA is higher. just saying.

I actually did do my under grad at UCLA, and loved the school; but for some reason it always seems to me that the SC people have a more sense of community and loyalty to each other. so if the same hold true for the grad programs, i think the networking opportunities at SC would be great. further more i did business in downtown LA for five years before thinking of going to law school, and the griminess doesn't bother me at all.

I was just a bit curious about the value of that scolly at Pepperdine VS. higher sticker price for SC. by the way i did talk to pepperdine's admissions to increase my scolly or take the stip out and they refused...
