Iowa or Emory $$

Post by akahn2 » Fri Mar 18, 2011 1:41 pm

Looking for some advice here. I am in at Iowa paying out-of-state, although I plan on qualifying for in-state for years 2 and 3. I also just got into Emory with a $75k scholarship (total). I am also currently waitlisted at Minnesota and Indiana. I aim to practice corporate litigation (or something of that ilk) in the Chicago market. Any thoughts? Thanks.

Have you sent an LOCI to Minnesota? I'd say a big package to IU: B might be your best bet. All these schools seem like they'd be hard to get to Chicago from given the multitude of more highly regarded schools closer. I do have a very limited knowledge of the US map, however, having failed third grade geography so take my opinions with a grain of salt.

But 75k at Emory is > than sticker at Iowa. I don't really think it's close. I don't think sticker vs. sticker is close, actually.

75k at Emory is an INCREDIBLE deal, but I don't know how it gets you to Chicago. How'd you get 75k and WL at Minn. What are your #'s? Were you YP. It didn't take me long to go from LOCI to acceptance at Minn, and I'm a pretty boring old bloke so I think it might be YP.

None of these schools are good for BIGCHILAW, but Emory is the better choice of the 2.

That is quite the head-scratcher. My stats are 165, 3.70 non-urm undergrad at UW Madison with good softs. Sent a LOCI to both Indiana and Minnesota and I am about to send another one.

Good point about the finances. The ability to qualify for in-state at Iowa in years 2 and 3 does mean that I will save about $40k, and COL in Iowa is cheaper so there's that too.

I am from the Chicago area, so i have some connections that may make the market a bit more accessible after law school, but I know it's an uphill battle. Thanks for the input.
