Seems like a slam dunk for OSU to me.

Well then how much would your estimated CoA for all 3 years be at each place?JPR0488 wrote:I was kinda surprised by the poll results then realized I did not make the poll ? clear at all. The amount per year is scholarship money, not how much I'd be paying

Ask OSU to up that offer. Seriously OSU is TCR but they really need to give you more money when looking at the other options you have.

Re: WUSTL vs. Vandy vs. OSU for Ohio
Just did the math for OSU - with one year at OOS, 2 years IS, total cost is about $105K. That will be tough to pay back with no biglaw, but with SO, and family considerations, plus your obvious disdain for St. Louis and the South, I guess that is where you should go. For me, I would go 1. WUTSL (by a hair) - 2. Vandy - 3. OSU. The full scolarship would be a game changer and would make the decision to attend OSU more reasonable.

Wait, are you factoring in cost of living?JPR0488 wrote:Roughly 90k for Vanderbilt, 50k for OSU, virtually nothing for WUSTL. I want my strong personal preference for OSU to be worth the money but logically I just don't know that it is.
I mean from a financial perspective, I might go with WUSTL and hopefully use your ties to get Ohio. That being said, if your SO is moving to Columbus I would definitely be leaning towards OSU. Have you tried using your WUSTL and/or Vandy scholarships to haggle with OSU for more scholarship money?

Wait, on the OSU website, they estimate 60K Cost of attendance for out of state, 45 k for instate. I get 45+30+30.

Depending on the seriousness of your relationship I would definitely choose OSU in this situation.JPR0488 wrote:I'm factoring in cost of living but including what I have saved so these numbers are just in terms of how much debt I'd be taking on. And living in cbus would be cheaper for me than most because I'd most likely be living with the SO who will be working.
Definitely going to try to get more money out of them after I hear about that full ride, I've heard they're generally not too responsive to that though unfortunately.
Appreciate the comments!
OSU Pluses:
1. Living with SO.
2. Manageable debt load (50k).
3. Area you like (as opposed to St. Louis and Nashville which you say you dislike).
4. Dominant school in the area.
5. Places primarily into that area (as opposed to WUSTL and Vandy which primarily place elsewhere).
I think that your general happiness of being with your SO in an area you like as opposed to not being with your SO in an area you dislike is easily worth the difference between OSU and WUSTL.

Yeah, I mean if you are "only" taking on 50K of debt and you will be with SO and happy in Ohio, I think that is a reasonable option for you. Being in a place where you will be happy and around people you love certainly have value. Vanderbilt and, to a lesser degree WUTSL, will open up some doors for you, but they may not be doors you are interested in opening. That said, going to Vandy and doing a 1L summer in Ohio may be enough for Ohio employers, but that would be more debt (I think) and time away from the SO. I say try to get as much money as you can out of OSU and enjoy your time there.

Re: WUSTL vs. Vandy vs. OSU for Ohio
It's not like you're paying 150k more for that happiness, it's a manageable 50k amount of debt (even then I think there is something to be said for happiness as you will probably get better grades than if you were miserable).JPR0488 wrote:That's the same rationale I'd been using, but I was just afraid I was letting my emotions make a decision that should be a logical one. But it's good to hear from an objective person that it's not crazy to turn down a full ride for a still inexpensive option where I know I'd be happiest.

tOSU. I'm in the same place, dude. I love Columbus and think I want to be there after grad, but it can be tough when you have those choices. For me, Vandy would be the hardest choice, but Columbus is so loyal to tOSU.
Btw, OSU doesn't negotiate, as someone suggested. Just tried with two better offers from IUB and UIUC.

+1. It's really what I'm leaning towards right now.JPR0488 wrote:Yeah I live in the south so Vanderbilt is extremely well respected down here...most people I know are pushing it pretty hard.
