What should I do with my car? Forum

I have a 2009 Subaru with 450 dollar payments. There is no way I am going to take out loans to pay for my loan so I am left with three options:

1. Sell car and buy a junker

2. Sell car and don't have a car at all

3. Parents offered to pay my car payments while in school

Is there enough of a reason to have a decent car to do something like option 3?

I am from California and have rarely seen bad weather but I imagine something like a Subaru would fare better in snow than a civic.

I'd sell the car no matter what. Dropping $450/mo for a car is ridonkulous, and I would feel pretty crappy sticking my parents with that bill.

Then it's just a question of whether to buy something else. Where geographically are you going to school? Do you need a car there?

That's going to play a big part in whether you need a car. In Chicago, FWIW, it's totally unnecessary (and waaaaaay too expensive) to own a car IMHO.

I grew up in the northern (snowy) states and attend law school in a place that still gets its fair share of snow. I have a Forester and sometimes I am the only one of my friends still able to drive after a snowfall. Keep the car.

Yeah Subaru's are in the "Believe the Hype" category. They rock in winter climates.
