So torn!
I recently got accepted to Georgetown (last week
. However my dad is OKC U Alum and it has always been my dream to attend. I am torn as to what to do. I know Georgetown has a great international law program, which I am very interested in. However, the professors at OKC U are so nice. Does anyone have any advice for my predicament. Please be nice as I know some of you will not understand.

I don't know what an OKC U is. That being said, if you have a job lined up after graduation whereby you only need that JD in order to take the bar and then assume the position (the job, that is), then by all means attend OKC U. Otherwise, I think Georgetown is the best option, even if you want to return to a smaller local market. The key is making sure you start to meet attorneys in the market at places you're interested in working. Networking early (read as: first semester or before you start school) with people in-market is a great way to establish convincing ties that will be essential when you try to come back from a national school like Georgetown.

It all depends on whether or not you want a job after law school.

Sorry everyone. Oklahoma City University. Yes I do have strong regional ties in Oklahoma. I know it seems strange. Georgetown was my "super" reach school. I never expected it. So this is why I am having such a problem. I probably just need to sleep on it a couple of nights.

flame for sure no one in their right mind would go to a school like OKC U over a T14, or any T1 for that matter

If you think you will have a job lined up, go to okl city. No reason to go all the way to gtown. Plus it probably would cost you a lot more. Get a full ride or something to this other school.Princess PJ wrote:Sorry everyone. Oklahoma City University. Yes I do have strong regional ties in Oklahoma. I know it seems strange. Thank you. My main problem is the financial aspect. I have a house in OKC as well as an employer that will work with me on hours. I eventually want to end back up in Oklahoma anyways. I'm anticipating a very good scholarship offer at Oklahoma City University. With Georgetown I would be taking out loans and plus the cost of living is outrageous! But, Georgetown is such an excellent school that I never imagined I might have to say no to them.

Small town girl wants to stay small town because of her life. (no disrespect meant) That could be good, but if you want a serious law career and you can afford it, go to the best school. Your law school will follow you throughout your life and you know that your OK school isn't marketable outside that small area if several people aren't even aware the school exists. Names and prestige matter in law. But if you will be miserable in Georgetown, maybe not going is worth it? I would leave for the better school in a heartbeat, but this is your life.
PS FWIW going to a school because the professors are nice is not a good reason. Professors need to be challenging, engaging, etc but nice isn't that important of a quality such that you should even consider it in making a decision. "nice" gets to be kindof irrelevant very fast in law school. "Kind" is always important, "nice" is meaningless.

Did you apply to UT? If so I think that would be your best choice

Best school in the region would probably make sense. Or a better school than OKCU. Is there anything in between?AboveTheLawSchool wrote:Did you apply to UT? If so I think that would be your best choice

The good news is that the recession had absolutely no effect on the international law scene in Oklahoma.Princess PJ wrote:I recently got accepted to Georgetown (last week. OKCU has an excellent reputation in Oklahoma City, but your career goals will be infinitely better served with a Georgetown JD, even if you want to work in OK.Princess PJ wrote:Sorry everyone. Georgetown is by far the better choice even if you have to pay off a ton of loans. Why go to law school if you're not striving for something great. You can always go back to OK but if you want to be truly successful in law, you can't be complacent.
Not to be sexist but being female, you'll garner a lot more respect and opportunities going to Georgetown than OKC.
