Depends on the basketball fan.

Note: Duke is one of the few schools that would actually get me to scream full-throated support for UK.

I agree with the person who said that out west:

1. Cornell... no one know's exactly where it is, they just know it's in the Ivy League, so it's gotta be good.
2. Duke... everyone know's about the basketball team, but they also at least know it's a prestigious private school.
3. Penn... often confused for Penn State, and when it's not, most just think it's a flagship public school.

I take the school opinions of people who write "know's" highly.

Another important consideration is cost of attendance.

Estimated COA for three years:

Penn: $204,450
Duke: $200,814
Cornell: $217,140

Uh yeah...definitely cross Cornell off that list.

Yeah...where are you getting this from? Michigan tends to have hot women? This might be right, but I've never heard that. If you're going for hot women, I would suggest UVA, Vandy, Texas, UCLA?

Inferiority complex? I'm not the one blindly attacking another school in order to inflate my pathetically small ego. I actually like most of the Michigan students I have met (present company of course, excluded). Why the hell are you so threatened by us?

As a future Duke student, I can attest to my massively inflated sense of superiority.

I don't see how lay prestige is ever really relevant. For instance, my grandmother almost had a heart attack when I told her that I had been accepted to Vanderbilt. But when I told her that I'd been offered a large scholarship from Michigan she just said, "Well, they're no Vandy...I can tell you that right now." I also have friends who are more impressed by my University of Kentucky acceptance than by my UVA. It's all very silly.

Long story short, I'd visit all three schools and go with the one that feels like the best fit. That's what I plan on doing.

p.s. Ignatius Reilly, can you take your lute over to this thread and pluck me out a second opinion: http://www.top-law-schools.com/forums/v ... &start=525 .

So it just comes back down to what OP is asking...which is about lay prestige. The answer is, it depends on where you're from. Also, once you're an actual lawyer and in the field, the ones hiring you will already know the pecking order within relative prestige (with MV > CG for example), so lay prestige doesn't even matter anymore.

Very true, the loathing I feel for Duke basketball compels me to place them one rung below Cooley in my personal prestige ranking. . . fuck their US News score.

beachbum wrote:You might as well skip the conversation on prestige and go straight to the job prospects (numbers). And while I'm not sure what your career goals are, it seems that Duke and Penn tend to have marginally better placement than Cornell. All else being equal, go with whichever of those two better suits your goals/personality/lifestyle/feng shui.
Actually, I'd say there is a distinction to be made. Duke opens the possibility of working in the south to people without ties which is something to consider. Of course, overall placement is similar and Penn does allow student to take classes at Wharton.

1) I am not at michigan, but in my UG years I have been at many campuses. Michigan has the most attractive women out of any of the T14. End discussion.

2) To those of you at Duke who are getting so excited because I said duke is a school for dbags, relax. This is the internet. Duke students tend to have an over estimation of self worth.

Have any of you ever been to Ann Arbor? I would go to Michigan over any school excepting H&Y.

Michigans graduate programs are unbelievable, as is their business school and law school. People who matter know that michigan is one hell of a school, but for those of you who are trying to get laid by impressing people with your law school go to Cornell. For those of you who like unattractive bitchy women go to Duke.

This is just one man's internet opinion, so calm down.

It's too cold there, and I don't like college towns.

A2's alright. I grew up there so I know the town very well and I really don't see what all the fuss is about. It's not even the best college town in the big 10, imo

How can you checkout the ladies well if they are all wrapped up 8 months of the year?

And a man won't get his ass robbed.

I don't understand all of the lay prestige you Midwestern seem to ascribe to Cornell. I've never heard of it referred to as anything but the caboose of the ivy league or a quasi state school.

Penn and Duke are clearly stronger than Cornell for anything outside of NYC law firm work so drop Cornell. Penn and Duke basically have the same career prospects, so go to Penn since they have an ungraded Legal Research and Writing class for 1L while Duke's is graded.

TBF when I was away from Philly, lay people know Cornell after HYP, over Columbia and Penn.

Seriously? What are you waiting for?
