How is Thomas M. Cooley law school?

Post by Rmdxthx » Wed Feb 02, 2011 3:03 am

How is this law school? It has been sending mails to me for months. Full tuition waived.
( International student. December LSAT 165, GPA 3.62, so it looks like that I will get in if I apply)

Not another Cooley thread. Can we just get the moderators to lock these things?

IBTL! Heyo flame.

But no, it's not a good school. In fact, it's something of a running joke on this forum... and not in a good way. Even if it's free, the job prospects aren't good. With 165 you'll be able to go somewhere much better.

wish a mod would lock this. The Cooley threads are really getting out of hand on TLS.

I propose that this thread be locked, and then stickied for all eternity.

It's ranked the 12th best law school in the US:

I wonder why Yale dropped a spot this year? Maybe some previous 3L's, in their recently-graduated haze of elation, busted some of the chairs in the law library? That could have really hurt them.

Eh, Harvard is the only truly national one. GNV are really good though, but are essentially peer schools. Go to the one where you want to live/practice and/or the one that offers you the most money.

TMU, CYG rounds out the T10. After that it's pretty regional. A lot of people opt out of the T10 and go to Cooley on a full scholarship and see pretty good Michigan prospects afterward.

People who talk about T12, CYGUT, are just blatantly Cooley trolling. Cooley students are a bit insecure and have a tendency to do that. The UMinn kids have a little more self respect and confidence so you don't usually see T11 trolling.

the self rank by cooley is pretty comical. My guess is that the professors there are embarrassed by it.

A lot of people feel that way. Yale shamelessly games the rankings. A few years ago they doubled the amount of floor space in their library by just cutting each floor in half. Now Yale kids climb a little stepladder through a hole in the new "ceiling" to go from i.e. floor 1A to 1B.

It's extreme, but it works.

The rationale for creating the Cooley Rankings are equally comical as the outcome that places said school above "mediocre" schools such as Univ. of Penn., UCLA, and Univ. of Chicago.

Pursuing the General Introduction to the Judging the Law Schools rankings, one will find this passage:
It was to provide an option to this heavy reliance on subjectivity and the growing popularity of the US News rankings that Judging the Law Schools was written.
A prudent reader will notice that the sentence is passive, not active. A passive sentence is often used when the actor (who does the verb) is unknown, or as in this case, when the writer wants to hide the actor from the reader. Here, the actor is Cooley which created the laughable rankings. To hide any obvious biases, the author of the Introduction used passive voice to hide Cooley.

Long story short, Cooley uses these rankings to lure students who are probably unfit for law but nevertheless are so inclined as to got to law school. With clever tactics like hiding that they in fact are the only school using the Judging the Law Schools rankings, Cooley is able to attract generations of unsuspecting students.

CRITERIA USED TO MAKE COOLEY RANKINGS (I put the important ones in red - the rest are not important to ranking a school in my opinion):
  • Total J.D. Enrollment
    Total Minority Enrollment
    Percentage of Minority Students
Median Percentile Undergraduate Grade Point Average
    Median Percentile LSAT Scores
    Total Applications
    Number of Full-Time Faculty
    Number of Part-Time Faculty
    Total Teaching Faculty
    Number of Minority Faculty
    Student-Faculty Ratio
    Typical First-Year Section Size
Number of Course Titles Beyond the First Year
    Full-Time Resident Tuition
    Full-Time Non-resident Tuition
    Percentage of Students Receiving Grants/Scholarships
    Median Amount of Grants/Scholarships
    Total Volumes in Library
    Total Titles in Library
    Total Serial Subscriptions
    Number of Professional Librarians
Library Hours per Week with Professional Staff
    Total Library Hours per Week
    Library Seating Capacity
Number of Networked Computers Available for Use by Students
    Library Total Square Footage
    Non-Library Total Square Footage (hahahahah!)
    Total Law School Square Footage
    Percentage of Graduates Employed
Number of States in which Graduates are Employed
    First-Time Bar Passage Percentage
I wonder what the rankings would be like only with the red ones above?

No offense intended to anyone in this thread, but I have no idea how you can reach 500+ posts on TLS and not know about the Cooley rankings. It's the main reason it gets singled out for abuse above and beyond the usual TTT slights.
