When should you apply to "big law" firms?(1L)

Grades obviously not out yet. Better to wait, or just apply right now to get their attention? It's obviously tough (next to impossible according to CDO), but I have a little confidence in my grades. Assuming I did as well as I hoped, should I wait till my grades are out?
