I live about an hour away in morning traffic, sometimes 90 minutes if some dumbass hit some other dumbass.

i'm looking at a good 1.5hrs each way. wondering if it's worth getting an apt on/near campus. have no choice on school and have a family and can't move. just interested in what others are doing.
thanks.
thanks.

Also, from your experiences, do people advise to live near or far from campus?

Definitely close to campus. I live about a 10 minute walk from campus. It's more convenient because it's not always possible to schedule classes back-to-back and you may have other commitments during the nighttime (i.e. journal or group meetings). I am also not the type that likes to hang out on campus all day - I like to go home, eat, and take naps during the day.tbldc2009 wrote:Also, from your experiences, do people advise to live near or far from campus?

Whereas I don't mind living further away. When I am on campus, I am there until classes are done. Any downtime, I spend reading up for other classes. Helps cut the homework load.

This would be exactly my situation if I choose to attend a school I'm seriously considering. cbq, how many miles between your current address and school? To me, it would be 90 miles, mostly on an interstate hwy.cbq wrote:i'm looking at a good 1.5hrs each way. wondering if it's worth getting an apt on/near campus. have no choice on school and have a family and can't move. just interested in what others are doing.

I drive 60 minutes to my undergrad. Its time wasted. I'd rather be sitting on a subway for an hour being productive. Perhaps that will be my sitaution for l.s. if I end up in Chi.

I heard that someone takes the train from Providence to Boston everyday to get to class.

As a Senator, Joe Biden took Amtrak from Wilmington, Delaware to DC (110 miles) for 35 years.

doing that twice a week for a few months out of the year isn't that hard.im_blue wrote:As a Senator, Joe Biden took Amtrak from Wilmington, Delaware to DC (110 miles) for 35 years.

As angiej noted, it definitely matters whether you can work during that time. If you commute for 2 hours on a subway and read the entire time, that's not a big deal because there isn't much lost. But if you're driving 2 hours a day you are definitely losing time.

Actually, that's not so bad- about an hour. The commuter rail is very comfortable and has tables, and most of the people are business folk getting work done on the commute, so the atmosphere is good.dakatz wrote:I heard that someone takes the train from Providence to Boston everyday to get to class.

Yes sir. But if I don't get in I'll be taking the full-ride offer from the Chicago school I got into.twryan wrote:I thought you applied ED at IU - Indy?angiej wrote:I drive 60 minutes to my undergrad. My school is an hour away by car. That's if I play the avoid traffic game. I get to school eeerly and leave after rush hour.
I much agree with the sentiment that getting all one's work done on campus is a plus. I also listen to supplements on the drive sometimes. The commute can be a stressor, but I feel like it can be turned into something like a demostration of dedication w/r/t/ personal branding and job interviewing.
