Lower T14 at sticker vs suicide

Post by itsover » Sun Jul 18, 2010 9:41 pm

I thought my school was a great choice until I started lurking around TLS. Now I'm beginning to wonder if suicide might be a better option. Or if they're essentially the same thing. :|

What do you think?

Pretty funny.

But alright, if we think OP is totally emo:

TLS really skews the reality of law school. Going to a lower t14 at sticker is the correct choice for a lot of people, many of whom do not find it necessary to commit suicide. You're not a special little flower so don't assume you're the only one paying sticker at those schools. However, if you feel like you are not able to handle law school and if tls drives you to thoughts of suicide, you should probably withdraw and seek an alternate path.

Yeah, joking about suicide never goes well on the internets. It isn't quite as bad a joking about bombs on a plane, but it just makes everyone uncomfortable.

To the OP, presumably, you've done a cost/benefit analysis, taking into account what sort of job you could get without law school right now, etc. It isn't like anything has changed since you sent in your deposit--the economy is still shit. So why the worry?

This is absolutely right. Law does not produce happy people; if you have ever actually considered suicide, you should be thinking hard about how your mental health will fare during law school.

God everyone relax... everyone got their panties in a bunch tonight? CC, I thought this was hilarious.

But seriously OP, do some serious soul-searching and think about whether law is something you really want to do. If you can't picture yourself in any other field, you really think you'll love practicing law (and you really understand what all is involved in practicing law... aka not Boston Legal or Law and Order), and you are okay with being below median/striking out at OCI and working a job for less than stellar pay, then go for it. But if you think law school is a golden ticket to riches and prestige, then you need to reassess. Realize that you could very likely be in debt for a significant part of your life and that is going to be a major factor in all decisions you make going forward.

I hope the comments about suicide are completely in jest. If not, please put law school on hold and seek help from your family, friends, and/or a professional.

That being said, have you used a loan calculator to figure out your expected loan payments?
http://www.finaid.org/calculators/scrip ... yments.cgi

Look the "required" salary estimates as a rough guide of what you will need to make at a job. You'll want to forecast your own post-grad budget, being honest with yourself about your expected expenses (including the monthly loan payment). The purpose of this exercise is to know what your post-grad salary expectations need to be. If your work on your budget indicates that you need to make a big law salary to meet your budget, then you need to be happy working at a big law firm, and be comfortable with the odds that that will be an opportunity given your school (this is a subjective risk-tolerance question).

If you realize that you need to land a BigLaw job and that type of work repulses you, look into Income Based Repayment and your school's LRAP program to see if that can help get you into the type of law job you actually want. If these programs are not sufficient, it may be wise to look into going to school elsewhere on a scholarship.

At any rate, despair is not a productive option, and the problem is certainly not too big for you to wrap your head around and address like a professional. Buck up, you'll find your way through this.

I've never understood why suicide is always the 'out'. There are so many more creative ways to give the middle finger to society. Sad face.
