UNC vs W&M

Post by expungemalice » Sat May 22, 2010 8:10 pm

I was curious where most people stand on this decision. Assume that UNC would be about 26,000 less over the 3 years. This difference, while significant is not a deal breaker. That being said, I would prefer to work in a big city like DC or NYC. Also, I have a preference against UNC because of its proximity to where I've lived my entire life.
W&M seems to have better placement both in NJL250 and clerkships (21.8% vs 15% NJL and 4.2% vs 1.8% clerkships). But UNC has a much better college town.
Does anyone have any convincing arguments one way or the other?

W&M is much better at DC placement than UNC. I'd also like to link you to my breakdown of W&M's employment stats from 2009 - http://www.top-law-schools.com/forums/v ... start=2225
You'll have to scroll down a bit til you see a bunch of numbers and a wall of text.

Plus, I thought Williamsburg was pretty awesome. It seems to me a laid back place that will be good for studying, while also being pleasant and idyllic visually. The ocean and Newport News/Virginia Beach is only 30 minutes away. Plus, and I don't know if this is relevant, but they have amazing golf in the Williamsburg area.

You're probably not going to get NY from either. Go W&M if you really really really want to work DC, but the market is incredibly saturated, more so than most. Keep in mind you'd be competing with T-14, W&L, George Washington, American, George Mason, and probably a couple I forgot. Best of luck.

If you are in the top 20%, you'd probably be able to go to NY in some capacity, and W&M does put about 15% of its class into the Northeast (mainly New York). DC is saturated, but W&M placed very well into DC in both private and Federal Gov't positions even in 2009.

Mason isn't really that competitive statistically, despite their closer proximity to DC, and W&M historically comes in a pretty close 2nd to GW in DC-region placement outside the T14 (which includes Georgetown of course).

Hey, UNC is still a good school, so pick which one you feel most comfortable with. Job prospects will be pretty good but not slam-dunk from either school, and while I think W&M is clearly better at DC and NY placement, there is something really wonderful to be said about living cheap in a medium-sized city in NC.
