UPENN vs. Fordham $$$
Hey people I need some advice,
Penn at sticker or Fordham 75k
I want to eventually work in New York. In addition, most of my family is based in New York and I really want to stay here but the lure of a top 10 is killing me.
Advice Please!

Wait, how much debt would you graduate with from Fordham? If you can keep the debt super low, and you just want to work in NYC but not necessarily NYC big law... Fordham may be a stronger option. Tough to make an assessment w/o knowing how much debt you are taking on and what your career ambitions are, imo.

My advice, Penn. This is based on it being better at everything, especially placing into NYC. This does assume some things, like that you are considering/pursuing Biglaw or some other prestigious position.

At Fordham I would be living at home ( at least for 1L) so thats saving money on rent right there. I would graduate with significantly more debt from penn. However, at this point biglaw is my career ambition.thatsnotmyname wrote:Wait, how much debt would you graduate with from Fordham? Oh man, I am leaning towards Fordham and was looking for some re-assurance that I'm not throwing my life away.

I would attend penn w/o a doubt anything short of no debt out of fordham. This is up to you tho. I''d prob attend Penn regardless. If you can graduate from fordham with little to no debt though and you like it, you wouldn't be throwing your life away. Just seems like Penn would pay off more in the longrun. HTH. No matter what you choose life should work out okay.Blimpo12 wrote:Oh man, I am leaning towards Fordham and was looking for some re-assurance that I'm not throwing my life away.

Yea, I assumed that your cost of living would be covered in NYC considering you said you had family there, but I wasn't sure.Blimpo12 wrote:

But now that you said that NYC big law is your career ambition... Penn.
If you had said that you didn't want big law, I would've gone Fordham. Big law is definitely attainable from Fordham, though you'll just have to place better in your class. But if you really want big law, you have a better chance of getting it out of Penn. It all comes down to how badly you want big law, imo.
But whatever you pick you won't be throwing your life away. Your debt coming out of Fordham will be very manageable, even if you don't get big law. You should be able to find something decent in NYC coming from Fordham..., just not something that will necessarily pay you six figures starting.

Penn for sure. If you get a biglaw job, paying off that debt should only take a few years. It seems like a lot of money, but it will be worth it.

Tough choice, but I'd go w/UPenn - keep in mind that if you wanna practice in NY, you gotta compete not only with Columbia and NYU grads, but also Cornell, and even the top @ Cardozo and Brooklyn grads.

Penn is clearly the better choice here but you can do well in NYC from Fordham. Fordham is where my sister's fiancee went to law school and he's working in BigLaw. However, Fordham isn't exactly NYU.

Penn, Penn, Penn.
$75k at Fordham is nothing to sneeze at, but it's not like you're getting a full ride -- you'd still graduate with substantial debt.

I mean you ultimately have to decide based on personal preferences, but for me unless I had a full ride at fordham I wouldn't even think twice about taking Penn. I love NY it is much better than Philly but University City aint so bad and the only thing fordham has against Penn is location.

Ehhh - I prefer Philly to NYC. I've worked in both cities, and NYC can really take a toll on a person when you're spending 50+ hrs a week there for years on end. I much prefer the pace of life and the people in Phila.Dtackpat75 wrote:I mean you ultimately have to decide based on personal preferences, but for me unless I had a full ride at fordham I wouldn't even think twice about taking Penn.
