USC or Vandy?
Hey everyone, hoping to get some helpful input.
I am going to law school, most likely want to get involved in sports and entertainment law. I am from Southern California and most likely want to live there after school. I got rejected from UCLA and waitlisted at USC. My best offer was a $54,000 scholarship over 3 years to Vanderbilt. I sent in my seat deposit and was all set to head to Vandy, I really liked the school and the area pre-flood. A couple days ago I got accepted off of the waitlist at USC. Now I have a pretty big decision to make. I really liked Vanderbilt, and am a little wary of USC's location. I got a lot of financial help from Vanderbilt, but feel like USC may ultimately be a better fit for what I want to do. Any advice?

Entertainment law is notoriously difficult to break into, mainly because of its extremely small size relative to other sectors. Even though usc "specializes" in ent law, barely anyone actually gets a high paying job offer in the field.
I'm turning down USC sticker and UT sticker for $$ at Vandy myself. Not a fan of downtown LA over here.
Just my two cents.

Instead of asking yourself "What do I want to practice?" you should be asking yourself, "Where do I want to practice?" If you are from California and want to stay there after graduation, then go to USC. But overall, Vandy is the better school, especially for biglaw. So you need to figure out how much weight to put on location.

See if USC will match / exceed Vandy's offer (which is kind of doubtful given the WL acceptance but try it who knows). If they will it makes your decision far easier.

If you really want Entertainment law, USC is the only real option. I'm sure Vandy puts some people there, but you need to be in New York or LA. This isn't meant to disregard the other advice, which is spot on, but if you really are sold to entertainment law then you must go to USC.
Problem is, as a LA native with some connections to the sports and film segments of entertainment (these connections are minimal), most people have given me the impression that vast majority of lawyers in entertainment work on the representation end. This means you'll get paid when your client gets paid. Which is often never.

USC "LA" is vastly different from UCLA "LA". But USC doesn't have that gigantic wall surrounding the campus with guards at openings for show and tell. As long as you practice common sense big city street smarts I'm sure you'll be fine. And the campus is actually pretty nice. If you're from So. Cal why don't you go visit?

I am currently at undergrad at Cornell and they want my decision before I can go back to see it again. I have visited before, and while it doesn't offer the perqs of being able to just walk to and around campus with beautiful surroundings, the campus itself does seem nice enough. I feel like I would be commuting anyways, so it may not be that big of a deal. With all of the advice I am getting, it stills feels like such a toss up to me. I have asked if they could possibly bridge the gap between the Vandy scholarship money and the sticker they are currently offering, and if they can help me out at all I think I would choose USC. Does anyone know how much damage Vandy took on during the flood? Thanks for all the responses everyone, please do keep them coming, I need all the input I can get.Ryou wrote:USC "LA" is vastly different from UCLA "LA". If you plan on working in LA following graduation, the USC alumni network will be much stronger than Vandy's. From what I've gathered, graduating from USC (assuming you do well) will land you a job in Cali. On the other hand, I agree with what was said above about matching scholarships- at least ask? From what I gathered Vandy only had minimal damage from the flood but that is just word of mouth and what I gathered from their site- so, what "minimal damage refers to- I'm not sure"
