Tulane Law 30k Vs. Wake Forest 22.5k

Post by twintipping_bumps » Thu Apr 15, 2010 11:26 am

It is down to these two schools for me. Ideally, I would like to practice Entertainment Law in NYC or CA. I can see myself getting involved with Sports Law, for which Tulane is noted. Wake Forest is 8 spots higher than Tulane. And 22 spots higher for UG. The job placement stats seem a touch better for Wake.

Wake would cost about 9k more over three years. My fall-back plan is to join my father's small general practice in my hometown, and I think this might be an instance where the lay prestige of a lower ranked school supersedes that of a higher ranked school. I get the impression Tulane would be a better name to add to the firm than Wake. Tulane just seems to have some sort of mystique in the North East, yet it seems dangerously close to the T2 right now.

I have to decide by the end of the day and feel nauseous. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

Thank You.

sounds like you want Tulane, but are hung up over the slightly higher rank of WF..... it seems like you have some options out of ls, so why not minimize your debt and go to Tulane?

E/mail Melanie Nutt and ask for an increase in your scholly. I did and it worked well for me. I think WF is a better option, especially if you fall-back plan is just a fall-back plan. If youthink it tis likely you eill be joining daddy, then go to the cheapest of the two.

I'm not sure how much weight Tulane swings in either NYC or CA, but if you can always get a job at your dad's firm, then go to the cheapest school you can.

It's not like you'll be shunned for going to Tulane, it's a very nice school.

Sports law? Tulane
Entertainment law? Tulane
NY placement? Tulane
CA placement? Tulane
NC big law? Wake
SC big law? If it exists (of course it exists...or does it?), Wake
Lay prestige? Tulane
Has Tulane always been at the back half of the T1? Yes - so you shouldn't be worried about how close it is to the '50' mark.
Cheaper (for you)? Tulane

Unless I'm missing something....

in va/nc/sc area, wake has way more prestige. Some one was posting earlier in this thread (i believe it was this threqd) about how his boss in mexico liked the prestige of a wake forest law degree.

That being said, it seems like tulane has more name recognition, and if you've already got connections, definitly go for the cheapest school.

In terms of academic quality and prestige, not looking at any particular field, these schools are about as similar as you're going to find. The differences are going to be in lifestyle (WS v. NOLA) and potentially geographic placement. Do yourself a favor and refuse to let USNEWS make this decision for you.

Quality of life in the day-to-day matters a lot more than you might expect, too. Just don't underestimate the "feel" of the school (and city) you choose.

In terms of finances, 9 K is still a lot of money. Are there GPA stipulations for both scholarships? Tulane's 3.0 is not easy by any means, fyi. Good Luck!

They're pretty similar and considering you have a job no matter what happens, just go wherever you like best (which appears to be Tulane).

I sent the deposit in to Tulane today. For the comments about my fall-back, my goal is to work work hard and get big-law for ten years and then return home as my father retires, since it would be a real shame to see him have worked so hard his whole life as a first generation grad to establish a business and then just let it end. Hopefully I can bring it up another level. For others, thank you for the feedback.

I still say Tulane is ranked 15-20 spots too low, maybe more. Some people will say I am crazy troll, but they won't be able to give me a reason beyond current job prospects (which are affected by rankings in the first place), LSAT scores (which don't correlate with lawyer quality) or the fact that Tulane Law has been traditionally ranked in the 40's (which is arbitrary and doesn't take into account important factors related to educational quality).

Tulane!
OP wants entertainment Law in NYC or CA, so the bolded part is irrelevant.

Good point. I failed to consider which school a raving sociopathic killer would attend.
