UNC $$$$, UVA, Mich, Northwestern $, Vandy $
Looking to practice in DC, Nashville, California, Atlanta, maybe NC. Interested in PI but will probably work for a private firm for a while to pay back debts and then go into PI. Also interested in the business side of things and might want to go into work founding a non-profit or something else entrepreneurial. Other priorities are an enjoyable three years with chill students who are sociable and like to study hard and act mature but also go out to bars and have a good time. So let me know what you think.

If its 50% or more, vandy.
Anything at sticker terrifies me, but I would love to go to UVA
Free Law school rules. Chapel HIll is awesome. So I almost voted for that.
You have a very tough, and awesome choice. congrats

Those are a lot of places to be interested in practicing... If you have an inkling that you'll want to stay in NC I'd pick UNC- cheap COL, free tuition, cool town, does well in the state. If you're really looking at covering the most bases on that list though it's UVA- they're good for DC and probably do quite well in Nashville, NC, and Atlanta. You don't have Chicago or NYC on the list of desired places so I'd guess that negates the large benefits of NWestern and Mich. IMO UVA gives you much better coverage than Vandy (though obviously in Nashville that won't be the case), which seems like what you're going for based on that list.

Michigan does quite well in DC, CA and Atlanta. No clue about NC.

Judging by this statement, Vandy and UVA sound like they'd be right up your alley, just going by party repuatation.Other priorities are an enjoyable three years with chill students who are sociable and like to study hard and act mature but also go out to bars and have a good time
No real wrong choices, but I'd rule out UNC because you're not sure you want to stay in NC. I figure you probably got some nice Vandy money if you made it into those other schools. If so, Vandy might be a good choice if you're debt averse but still want good prospects down South with some national mobility. But really no bad choices.

Vandy or Northwestern, depending on the amount of the scholarship offers. Congrats on the great cycle!

I agree with the last part, but even if you 100% want NC, I wouldn't take UNC.Rock Chalk wrote:Do you mean you'd like to live in NC, or you'd settle for it? But you seem undecided so:thenational wrote:Looking to practice in DC, Nashville, California, Atlanta, maybe NC.If it's substantial, then take NW, otherwise choose who you like best between Michigan, UVA, and NW. If you want the south UVA is TCR, unless NU gave you a non-trivial amount of money. NU does surprisingly well in Atlanta though.

Out of curiosity, what where your stats and when did you apply?

Great options, but your career path sounds uncertain at this time.
Northwestern Univ. with scholarship money is, at first glance, the clear favorite followed by Vanderbilt with substantial scholarship money. However, it depends partially upon whether you want a beer drinking frat party campus environment or an upscale, urban environment. I get mixed impressions from your original post. If you have the opportunity to visit, then I think that your decision with respect to Northwestern will be clear as it differs substantially from UNC, Virginia & Michigan culturally speaking. If you are ready for an urban environment but still need frat parties, then Vanderbilt will meet your needs.

That's what I thought; it's a big hunk of change. If I were you, I'd take it, considering I loved Vanderbilt when I visited, and it does line up with your career goals (more ATL, Nashville, NC and a decent DC shot than Cali, but you still have a shot there). The student culture there is really social, and people love to drink and have a good time. Again though, no wrong choices, but with all that money, I'd say you can pretty much bag UNC.thenational wrote:$81,000Thirteen wrote:Vandy or Northwestern, depending on the amount of the scholarship offers. These results aren't helping me much...I like that Michigan seems to have sort of a fun collegial atmosphere without falling into the fratastic vibe of UVA. Vanderbilt is very appealing with money and I like Nashville. However, I have tons of connections in Nashville, so I could probably work there regardless of where I go to school. Or at least I hope so. UVA, however, seems to have everything I need...Shit.

Yeah, but I am pretty sure that Michigan will get me anywhere that UVA will, right? And Vanderbilt is sort of like UVA junior, with similar vibe and whatnot, but lesser prospects and a much better price. Then there's the full ride at UNC, which is very appealing since it's, well, a full ride.

Re: UNC $$$$, UVA, Mich, Northwestern $, Vandy $
Anyone know if these results are typical? I am applying this year with a 3.5/172. Is that roughly equivalent to a 3.6/171 and can I expect similar results?
OP, you are in a baller situation. Any chance you could use the Northwestern money to squeeze a little bit out of UVA or Michigan? I think if you could do that, then the answer is clear. However, as things stand, that is very tough. If you would be happy in the south, I say Vanderbilt or UNC, if you really like North Carolina. If you are uncertain and would like to keep your options open as much as possible, then I say Michigan or UVA. Mich has better placement in California but good overall, and UVA better in the south and mid-atlantic but good overall.

I would imagine if you apply early enough you should expect similar results to mine. Maybe a little less money at Vandy, but you certainly have good shots at Michigan and UVA.

This poll reinforces the theory that UVA is the patron law school of TLS.
