West coast vs. Midwest vs. East coast

Post by Mosca » Mon Apr 12, 2010 10:19 am

I've narrowed down my list to these schools. I want to go to a school that will give me the most options after graduation. I am 80% sure I want to do PI. I would prefer living in California, but would be fine with living in Boston. I hated St Louis when I visited for ASD, but loved the school. I do not want to get stuck in the Midwest.

Which school has the best LRAP? I'd probably go to WUSTL b/c it's the best out of the three.

Wustl isn't better than BC, and its probably not even better than UCDavis. Wustl definitely isn't better for San Fransisco than Davis.

BC if you'd be interesting in living in Boston.

Davis if you only wanna live in California.

If you aren't doing PI, BC no matter what.

Davis has the best LRAP, but I don't want to be stuck in a PI job I don't like for 10 years so I am not counting on using the full LRAP. If Davis was the cheapest I would go there, but I don't think I want to pay a 30k+ premium to live in California.

I voted Davis.

Known for being excellent in PI

Lowest cost of living among the best california schools because of its midwest* (read po-dunk) style area. Even in California you pay a lot less if your living any where near cows.

BC since it's the cheapest. I couldn't imagine a worse hell on earth than living in St. Louis. And the tuition for Davis is way too high for a school that's basically a T2.

BC's the cheapest, are you sure about that and are you neglecting to factor COL into your conclusion? Davis basically a T2?

I don't understand how BC could cost half as much as Davis? If it really does, you should be jumping at the massive scholarship you somehow got. Davis seriously insulted you if BC blew them away in the money department.

If you aren't sure about sticking around in PI, then you better go to BC. Debt grows exponentially.

OP-

I voted for Davis given your desires. If you truly want to work in CA after graduation, I don't think either the other two will increase your opportunities in CA, over Davis. Davis sounds like it will be the least expensive as well. Davis recently revamped their LRAP and don't forget, you can always benefit from IBR.

You mentioned that you want to attend the school that will give you the most options, well, I’m not sure one will give you increasingly more PI options than the other. Each will give you good PI options within their respecting geographic reach. Keep in mind that the Sacramento area is not a JD saturated market with T14/T30’s coming from across the country because, well, it’s Sacramento, so there will be less competition(McGeorge, primarily). That said you will not be limited to the Sacramento area, but I think you would have a huge edge on the competition their.

Did you get any acceptances at any of the other CA schools? What locations in CA are you hoping to work in post ls?

Specifically, what are your PI interests? Do any of the schools have programs that strike your interest or are pertinent to the area you’re interested in?

Did you read the figure attached to each school? Davis-62k v. BC 30K.

It says "school + total cost of attendance." Meaning Davis is somehow twice as expensive as BC. If true, Davis is insulting the OP.

Oops, yeah. I don't think Davis hands out much in scholarships. OP-What do those figures represent exactly?

The numbers represent tuition + cost of living - scholarships/grants - GI Bill. The money from Davis was need based aid and I also get less money from the GI Bill because Davis doesnt charge tuition, it's all "fees." I got into other California schools but they would be more expensive than Davis, and I'm waitlisted at the higher ranked Cali schools.

+1

I have no idea which is better at PI, Davis or BC.

If you hate St. Louis and the Midwest, then definitely not WUSTL. (Sorry to hear you hated it though, I personally love STL)

Pick the school that best suits your geographic preference. It sounds like California, so go to Davis.
