I dont know much about the academics at either school to be honest but GMU has a pretty decent reputation around Northern Virginia and closer ties to DC. Lots of people would rather live in Northern Virginia than Richmond area but that is up to you. Esp if you wanna live in Richmond your COL might not actually be that different. You're looking at nations capital vs state capital proximity with a lot of competition for positions at each (GMU, GW, AU, GULC and UVA, W&M, W&L)
