NYU+Scholly+Defer=No scholly next year? thoughts?

Hey guys, I really like NYU and I am really excited about the dean's scholarship they offered me. But, I am set on deferring next year, and NYU admissions told me they don't defer scholarships but that I am welcome to apply again for the scholarship during the next cycle. Well, my thinking is, if I am bound to attend NYU and not apply elsewhere because of the deferral agreement, why would they offer me a scholarship starting in 2011? Or am I being too cynical?

If anyone has experience with this or thoughts on the matter, I'd appreciate them a lot :)
