How possible is big law when you have graduated at the top of your class at a school ranked 20th-40th?
Is it possible?? Or would it be better to go to a school a bit lower ranked that has offered a scholarship?

If you can rise to the top of the class in a 20-40 school, in an ideal market, I would imagine you'd be a highly sought-after prospect. Keep in mind the market is terrible right now, so there is fear that a lot of employers aren't going to make it past the big names in the hiring process. If you have the skill, then you'll land on your feet no matter where you go.
I've been debating this same question. It won't be long before I have to start applying, and I've really considered take a top 40-20 over a top 14 if enough money is offered. A great education and minimal debt sounds amazingly appealing.
