Emory Law Degree in S. Florida
Hey everyone. So I definitely 100% want to work in S. Florida (Ft. Lauderdale/Miami) and was set to choose UMiami over UF due to a 23k scholly and the ability to live at home and not have any living expenses (no rent, laundry, minimal food expenses) making it cheaper than UF with what I see as smiliar job prospects in my target market. Then today I recieved an acceptance plus 54k (18k/yr) from Emory and have no idea what to do. I'm looking for any insight or anyone with knowledge as to how an Emory Law degree holds up in S. Florida/Miami. I'm aware of its spot in the rankings so please don't make that the argument to choose Emory. I want real "inside" information on how the S. Florida market views Emory compared to Miami/UF and if it is worth the enormous cost of going there (even with the scholarship it's expensive). Thanks in advance! I usually find people's opinions on here very helpful.

I don't have a useful answer, but I'd love to hear this debate as well.

I can only speak anecdotally, but I work for an attorney in S. Florida who went to Emory, and my understanding is that T14<Vandy<Emory<Tulane + UF/UM for the Ft. Laud./Miami market (Yeah, for one reason or another Tulane seems to be very well regarded here, also...). To give you a non-answer, it depends. The bigger firms are certainly going to appreciate the name on your degree.

Some of the bigger firms in Florida have been at Emory's OCI from the NALP data I've seen... Not sure if that's still true ITE. I also noticed a little UNC love from Florida. I'm wondering the same thing about Emory so I'd love to hear more from actual Floridians.

Re: Emory Law Degree in S. Florida
There were several Florida firms at Emory's OCI. I know several 2L's (at the upper end of the class rankings) that have associate positions in Florida. A couple in Orlando and a few others in Miami.
I got a callback from an Orlando firm with zero Florida ties. If you actually plan on being there, I imagine it would be easier for you to work the Fla angle.
