Legal Employment NYU vs UVa

Post by Anonymous User » Sat Feb 13, 2010 11:32 am

Going to UVa would be about 50k cheaper for me than going to NYU. Does NYU have an enough of an edge in placement in

biglaw NYC?

biglaw DC?

clerkships?

to warrant the extra cost?

Thanks.

NYC, yes. DC, no. Clerkships, no.

clerkships? For NYC, I'd go with NYU. Otherwise, UVA.

to warrant the extra cost? Depends on where you ultimately want to work and which school you feel more at home. So I say that this is a personal choice.

Thanks.

Argh, I am facing the exact same dilemma, except that I probably want to do public interest and I was offered a large scholarship at UVA. Before I got the scholarship offer, I had pretty much decided that the cheaper cost of living alone didn't warrant choosing it over NYU (or Columbia, but I have pretty much decided on NYU over Columbia) but now the scholarship changes things. What do I do????

Please don't hate me for posting anonymously...I just don't want to out myself, since I have discussed this with other prospective students who may post at TLS.

Go to UVA. NYU and Columbia win in placement to large new york city law firms - BUT it's by a slight amount even then. Take the $$$ and run. UVA will get you where you want to be.

The differences between the top 14 schools are often fairly exaggerated on TLS. You can call CCN a tier and MVPB a tier and generalize, but at the end of the day the biggest difference between those schools are what class rank you get, not the name of the school, if that makes any sense. Top 10% at MCP is going to wipe the floor with top third at CCN, top 10% at both schools already get more or less any job they want.
